Welcome to the Talking Health Tech Podcast. My name is Peter Birch. Today on the show, I'm joined by Aaron Liebtag from Heel Well. He's the co-founder of Pentavir, um, the inventors of Darwin AI. I've got so much to talk about uh with you, Aaron. Thank you so much for joining me today. Thanks
Aaron Leibtag 0:49
so much for having me, Pete.
Peter Birch 0:51
Look, I feel like this was a more appropriate place to have a conversation because for context, um uh the first time we spoke, I was wearing my high-vis vest uh during Digital Health Festival between the things, and we spoke to each other in the corridors for all of about a minute or two. I'm like, no, there's there's more to this conversation that needs to be had on a in a podcast forum. So now that you're are you back home in Toronto, or at least we're in different times. It's good to be able to sit down for a longer conversation.
Aaron Leibtag 1:20
I'm I I am in Toronto and thrilled to remember that conversation and and really looking forward to uh to this conversation.
Peter Birch 1:28
Yeah, cool. And the um uh so tell me a bit more. The uh your background experience and things, because there's the the Pentavere plea uh piece that ties in with Heelwell, with our good friends from Orion. Um let's not get too far ahead of ourselves here, but maybe introduce yourself. Tell us a bit more about you, the work you do, your background, and then how that kind of and then probably go from.
Aaron Leibtag 1:50
Sure thing. So as you said, my name's Aaron Liegtag. Uh in around 2017, myself and my co-founder, uh gentleman by the name of Stephen Aviv, we started a company called Pentiveer. Uh both of us before that spent over 15 years in finance, zero health degree health uh experience, but in finance, you know, data. good people, good processes You know, returning capital are really important things. And um both of us always had that appreciation around good data, good people, good processes, magic happens.

Why is roughly 80% of clinical data unused and what problems does that cause?

Aaron Leibtag 2:29
And when that falls apart, like disaster happens. Um, you know, Steve, from a technical architecture perspective, you know, spent a career building global systems, essentially managing risks. So if you think about John Hancock's in New Hedging system. He designed that system. And unfortunately, his mother went into a hospital. She broke her ankle. It should have been routine. She had several comorbidities that, you know, a healthcare professional would say, you know what? We should manage risk by setting the cast like this, maybe a regiment of blood thinners. It was documented in the chart, at no fault of the kid. Yeah. It just didn't happen and she passed away. So here you have Two guys in finance looking at healthcare and saying, How did that happen?
Aaron Leibtag 3:19
And The string that we pulled was it's because the majority of information that is documented. So this isn't prediction, this isn't forecasting, this is there is documentation by a healthcare professional uh somewhere in your electronic health record. But the vast majority of that isn't used. And back in 2017, we said, how is it that in industry, healthcare, that 17% of most countries' GDPs is actually life and death. The majority of data isn't used to improve healthcare at all. So we went about solving that. But we did it really, really differently than sort of your typical startup. We embedded ourselves in one of Canada's largest hospitals, an incubator that was really around validating medical devices.
Aaron Leibtag 4:12
And we published with that hospital the first ever peer-reviewed publication using our early natural language processing algorithms against real unstructured clinical.
