What is Strata Surveys and why launch this new survey series now?

Jacquelyn Melinek 0:06
Welcome back to Talking Tokens and to another edition of Strata Research's Endless Insights, the series where we sit down with our institutional research team and we break down one major timely trend across the industry. Last time, Alex and I covered the announcement of OUSD from Open Standard and what it means for existing issuers in the space like Circle. And today we're discussing a new initiative that we came up with internally called Surveys. Strata Surveys, some nice alliteration there, and we'll dive into it in a second. But the results from a recent survey where we conducted asking basically five industry leaders on the emerging adjunct payments and commerce industry. Alex just published the report covering the results of the survey.
Jacquelyn Melinek 0:50
So go check that out in the show notes below. But before we begin, as always, Alex, welcome back on.
Alex Beaudry 0:54
Hey, yeah, good to be here. Thanks for having me again.
Jacquelyn Melinek 0:57
Yeah, thanks for being here. I wanted to jump the gun in the intro, but essentially, we started this surveys initiative.

Who were the five industry leaders surveyed about agentic payments?

Jacquelyn Melinek 1:04
And it kind of derives from my days when I was a reporter at TechCrunch. And I would ask a certain number of industry leaders a list of questions, and then we compile it. And it's a good consensus on what are people actually thinking about, insert angle, insert topic, whatever it may be. And something that we were talking about internally is like, how agentic payments is like such a hot conversation. And I feel like we keep seeing it pop up in like small ways, but we haven't really gotten like a general theme or a general opinion from people. And so we hope you guys like this and we're going to be doing more of this where we survey people across the industry on specific topics and themes. And to start off,
Jacquelyn Melinek 1:43
Yeah, we surveyed five people across the space who are either building with agentic payments in mind or focused on that solely or a mix of all of that in between. We had the CEO from Alchemy, the CEO from Anchorage Digital, Circle's chief product and technology officer. And then we had Azeem Khan, who is the co-founder of Myden, and then the head of business development for crypto and agentic payments at Rumble.

Why revisit agentic payments after the May report and what's changed?

Jacquelyn Melinek 2:11
So... There's a good summary of everything that we got there. Good list too. Yeah, for sure. But Alex, maybe to start there, you covered agentic payments in a report back in May, and you talked about where the technology was then. So what made you want to come back to this topic a few months later?
Alex Beaudry 2:27
If you haven't read the last report, go check it out. It's on the Token Relations website. But basically, the last report was focusing on what is agentic payments, kind of defining what it is, and then Also diving into the tech stack and where we are with the technology. So it also dove in a little bit about projections to the future and what we think agentic payments will actually turn into. There's been a lot of predictions by people like Morgan Stanley and McKinsey and various other firms that have said, here's how big agentic commerce is going to grow in the future. But the reason why I dove back into it is, first of all, I wanted to hear what the people actually building

Why do survey respondents believe institutions will adopt agentic payments before consumers?

Alex Beaudry 3:07
uh, these tools have to say about it, like how they think about, um, the future of agentic payments. And then also if anything's really changed, um, it's been a little bit since we covered it and obviously crypto things move very quickly. So I thought it would be worth, uh, diving back into it and seeing, uh, what's what's new with agentic payments.
Jacquelyn Melinek 3:26
So on that front, were there any overarching themes from the survey that you found interesting or anything that seemed to have broad agreement across all participants? And I have thoughts on this as well, but I want to see your take here.
Alex Beaudry 3:39
Yeah, I have a feeling we're going to have a similar take. But after reading all the responses that we got back, one of the overarching themes was that it's not going to be necessarily consumers that adopt this first, but institutions. And if you've read any of our past research on neobanks and crypto cards, it's kind of a similar story to that, where these things kind of get initially pitched as a consumer facing technology, right?
