So there I was in Bombay Beach at the Biennale a couple of months ago. And um someone told me about an art uh exhibition in a container Called the uh the temple to the scientific method. And so I walked over there to check it out. And Holy shit, really just cool art. Everything in Bombay Beach is just so unusual and and interesting. Anyway, I go in and it's the a bunch of paintings uh of prominent scientists. Um But it's not just scientists, it's particular scientists who were rebels, um And you can see that the artist isn't just it's not just exalting scientists, it's exalting The scientific method Which is different, right? Because the scientific method is a way of thinking. It's um It's an expression of Skepticism and humility and
It's um I don't know, it's it's it's like a telescope, it's a tool for seeing things. It says nothing about what you'll see, it's about what How to see? And I immediately was intrigued, like who is this artist? And then this guy walks in and uh We start talking and he's the artist and He's just super smart and He's got an unusual energy about him. And after a few minutes I said, uh Would you be willing to sit down and and do an interview for my podcast? And I was a little hesitant because he's uh Yeah I uh how do I say this? He's a private ki the energy he gave off was private and and cautious in a way. And I didn't wanna Intrude. Um but he said he'd be willing to to talk and uh we set up a time the next day and
I came over and I I found him and there was all sorts of shit going on. I think there was like a There's like a religious um kind of revival meeting going on in the yard behind this garage where we recorded and they were It was like a religious revival for the for a taco god and they were I don't know I mean I couldn't quite hear what was going on, but there was a lot of shouting and singing and carrying on going on had something to do with tacos or or tamales or something. Um anyway, th that's just the kind of vibe you get at Bombay Beach. So this dude's name is Dotto Nysis. And I guess this was his gamer name. Um and then when he started um showing his art, he he decided to use that as his moniker as an artist.
And um Yeah, this conversation is interesting. We You know, obviously we talk about art, we talk about science, we talk about his Childhood, which was quite rough, involved um homelessness, uh leaving home as a teenager, abusive. situation at home, uh we talk about the sacred and religion. We talk about him his work helping homeless people in Los Angeles um and uh people living in in the street obviously and we talk about um his experience being neurodivergent and what that means to him, how it's affected his life, how how it affects his communication, um his relationships and uh and Yeah, it's just uh Yeah. People are people are really something. I I my constant nourishment from this podcast is how when you really just sit down and ask questions with
