Anna Williamson 0:01
Welcome to The Affair, What Happened Next? I'm Anna Williamson and in this podcast we catch up with our past guests to find out what's happened since they came on the show. So let's find out who we're going to hear from today. Right, producer Naomi, who have
Naomi Channel 0:18
you got for us this week? Oh, I've got a treat. I've got a real treat for us. Do you remember, of course you remember, Sarah and Pav?
Anna Williamson 0:26
Oh, the first couple that we had come on the affair. Yes, of course. Sarah and Pav were a really interesting one to talk to, actually. But yeah, this definitely seemed to push a lot of people's buttons in the comment sections.
Naomi Channel 0:41
Absolutely. Well, let's just give a recap, shall we? For anyone who maybe hasn't listened, I would absolutely suggest going back and listening. They were on series two. And the kind of headline I guess here was, he's cheated on me many times, but I trust him now. So Sarah and Pav met when Sarah was just 17, Pav was 23. And Sarah was brought up in a really strict household, if you remember. She had rebelled and she had this new older boyfriend. Her parents hadn't been affectionate towards her growing up and Pav offered her love that she felt that she'd been lacking. She soon discovered that Pav had a wandering eye and she said that he had a string of infidelities, including a night with a sex worker. Despite this, they still decided to get married and 18 months later they bought their first home together.

But it was then that Pav dropped a bombshell. He said he was in love with somebody else, a woman he worked with, and then confessed that they had been having an affair. Sarah did kick him out and they started divorce proceedings. She went on dating apps but she just couldn't forget Pav. She said he was her best friend as well as her husband and soon enough they started having an intimate relationship again. Pav promised Sarah that he would break it off with this other woman and that they would try to make their marriage work and I think that was That was something that stood out to a lot of people was that Sarah, even though she was the wife, she almost became the other woman because Pav was still seeing this other woman.
Naomi Channel 2:32
Right. It became really overlappy. It did. Pav promised Sarah, you know, I'm going to break it off. I want to make our marriage work. But over the next five years, Pav did unfortunately continue to cheat on Sarah and At one point, she did agree to an open relationship and she even consented to a threesome with a woman that Pav fancied. I don't know if you remember that. One day, Sarah said something shifted in the dynamic of their relationship and Pav realized that he wanted to commit to her and only her. They did a lot of work. And she now describes their relationship as the best it's ever been.

What happened in Sarah and Pav’s original story – the affair, separation and reconciliation?

Naomi Channel 3:12
And she totally trusts him. And that's what she said at the time of recording. And she wanted to come on the podcast, I think, to prove that marriages that have... had serial cheating, serial infidelity, and that they could work out if that trust had been rebuilt. Can you remember, Anna, what you kind of took away from that episode?
Anna Williamson 3:36
Yeah, I think for me, Sarah and Pav are almost sort of the poster couple of the intricacies that can happen within relationships. uh, relationships where there is infidelity. Um, because as we saw from and heard from them, it was very, very complex. And what was really brave, uh, I think is that both of them came on at this, you know, came on together as a couple. And I know a lot of people were perhaps, um, you know, raising one eyebrow very high at, at PAV. Um, and I can say, I don't think any episode that that we've recorded on The Affair has garnered quite such heated debate and comments around. And I think this for me was case in point of why we do The Affair, because what we offer, what I offer is that judgment-free space.
Anna Williamson 4:27
I am not here to offer mine, but as the listeners, as the viewers, you are able to come up with your own judgments. And often they come from a very deeply rooted personal perspective. our own system of morality, of values, experiences.
