What is the 10‑by‑10‑10 backpacking challenge and why was it started?

John Kelley 0:00
Yeah. Put the team on my back. Never fold, never crack. The whoop always roll with a pack. What's going on? Welcome to the backpacking podcast. As always, John Kelly here with Jeremiah Stringer. My good friend Jeremiah. And and here's what's crazy is uh you guys won't believe this. But Riverside is causing issues for us today. John starts every show with I hate Riverside. I I hate Riverside. It is probably the worst program in history. And yeah, they are not gonna sponsor us at any given time. But I'm hoping they hear this and are like, you know what? We're gonna fix our program so it's not so janky.
Jeremiah Stringer 0:39
Excited over the obstacles because and it looks like they love each other. I don't know if everybody can see them on their screen or not yet. Yeah. Got DMS Adventures here and uh we appreciate y'all joining us.
John Kelley 0:50
Yeah, and I do want to say something up front here, and I and I want people to understand this. We are absolutely 100% gonna make money today, okay? Like we are unashamedly, we have seventeen hundred and fifty dollars to come up with today because we stuck we said, you know what, we're gonna raise this money, but if we're gonna do it, we've gotta step out first. So we've already given a hundred dollars to to the event. So we've already done our part today. Um and but we wanted to make sure we kicked off. We were gonna give some money first, but now it's you guys. Yeah. We want to make sure we finish off this uh last Whatever it is, one thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars.
Jeremiah Stringer 1:30
Yeah, and and we'll let our guest explain here in just a second what we're raising the money for and what we're really doing here today. Um, but we will tell you throughout the show how to donate and uh be asking for your help. So basically
John Kelley 1:44
Basically, what we would we want to let you guys know is that these three people right here: Rugged Mountain Dad, Rugged Mountain sister, rugged mountain mister, ten miles. Ten nights in ten states.
Jeremiah Stringer 2:00
Yeah, what's the inspiration? Tell us a little bit about it.
Rugged Mountain Dad (DMS Adventures) / Host guest - primary spokesperson 2:03
Okay, yeah. So last year, these guys kinda regret they showed me Ryan Trahan's uh Fifty States and Fifty Days series. Uh, where he went to fifty different states over the course of fifty days, staying in Airbnb's, which is probably what they would have rather done, uh, to raise money for Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital. And I was inspired by that, both on like the YouTube level and the personal level. And so I got to thinking what could we do in our little niche of backpacking here and with our small channel that could Maybe be inspiring, have some impacts, help others. And um the backpacking ten ten ten challenge is what I came up with. So August of last year ish. I just started researching to see if it was logistically possible to drive to ten different states, hike in five miles, camp, hike back out five miles, and move on to the next state.
Rugged Mountain Dad (DMS Adventures) / Host guest - primary spokesperson 2:59
And lo and behold, it was. So that's what we put together.
John Kelley 3:05
Well and realistically, you spent almost as much time on the road as you did on a trail.
Rugged Mountain Dad (DMS Adventures) / Host guest - primary spokesperson 3:11
Uh correct, correct. Uh our longest drive was coming up there to Kentucky. That was six forty five. And then on average after that it was probably around four to five hours for each drive. So it's twenty three hundred miles of driving total.
John Kelley 3:27
That's that's insane. Hey, real quick, I want to say something. Derwent off the rails. We do not want to do the super chats through us to go to them because we won't get that money for at least a month. So we we're gonna give you guys the link here in a second so you guys can actually go online and and do this yourselves. Um because we don't want to uh let's just say we don't want to risk there being money, any money lost that needs to go to St. Jude.
Jeremiah Stringer 3:50
No middleman. We just give all the money straight to St. Jude. So yeah, I get we're kind of working out the Kinks here um little on air production. But John's working on he'll put a link in the description um of this video. And if you're live right now enjoying this with us, uh in the comments. Um I'll have John to throw the link in the comments every few minutes.
