So this morning, we were reminded, as I was watching, of the cruelty of the Trump administration. We all watched, many of you watched, if you haven't watched it, we're gonna certainly play it, but we all watched a disturbing video of the horrific shooting in Minneapolis of a 37-year-old woman by an ICE agent. As I just mentioned to Chris, we're about to speak with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frye in just a moment. He's somebody who doesn't hold back ever and certainly always speaks passionately about the impacts of tragedies like this on his community. We're also continuing to follow the chaotic aftermath of the Trump administration's capture of the Venezuelan president and his wife and Trump's new threats against even more foreign countries, including a NATO ally, of course.
And these two huge developing stories, they are very different and they may sound very different, but they're a reminder that this administration is actively destabilizing, not just cities across the United States, communities across the United States. They are certainly doing that. They are also destroying our reputation in the world at the same time, all simultaneously. And we're going to speak to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer about all of that in just a moment as well. But we're going to start tonight in Minneapolis, where, just to restate it again, this morning, one of Trump's federal immigration agents fatally shot a United States citizen. Local officials are certainly urging calm tonight.
You've heard them say that all afternoon today. Many are specifically urging residents not to respond in any way that the Trump administration could use to justify cracking down on the city even more. And it's important though in this moment to talk about what proceeded today. You see, for weeks now, ICE has been making arrests in the city. But this shooting took place less than 24 hours after the Trump administration announced a new, even larger-scale surge of federal immigration agents, kind of like the ones that we've seen and we've covered here in cities like Los Angeles and Chicago. It's also happening in a place where they are not strangers to tragedy. The people in Minneapolis are incredibly familiar with senseless acts of violence, whether it was the killing of Melissa Hortman and her husband in June or the tragic shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in August.
And today, I was reminded of a very chilling fact. Today's shooting also happened less than a mile, just eight blocks away, from where Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd in May of 2020, just eight blocks away. Now, that killing, as we all remember, led to a protest movement, not just in Minneapolis, but all across the country and all across the world. It also led to riots, which were then weaponized by the first Trump administration to crack down on protesters. Now, despite this long history of tragedy and heartache that this city has gone through, despite the horrific video from this morning, Trump and his administration are adding fuel to the fire. That's how they're approaching this.
But before I show you just how they are trying to spin this shooting, I want to show you the video of what happened. And you may have already seen it again, but if you haven't, I should just warn you, it's incredibly disturbing and probably still very important to watch. I should also state loud and clear that this is less than 24 hours old. We do not know exactly what happened leading up to this shooting, but we do know that there were a lot of witnesses in the neighborhood, a number of whom have spoken to local media.
