Most photographers think that they're in the photography business. Honestly, they're not. They're actually in the attention business. Our cameras Our cameras are just tools. The business is getting people to notice you, trust you and obviously eventually pay you. That's the shift that changes everything in a career. When I stopped seeing myself as someone who made photographs and started seeing myself as someone whose trust is built through content, everything changes. Clients changed. Income changed. My opportunities changed. Today, I'm going to walk you through what I believe is the modern photography business. Not the photography business that your parents grew up with your uncle, the wedding photographer.
Steve Carty 1:19
Not the business that photographers keep teaching here on YouTube. This is the business that actually exists today from me. By the way, if you don't know me, I'm Steve Carty. I've been a professional photographer for 36 years. today we're talking about the actual business because if you're still waiting for your portfolio alone to get you hired if you're waiting for your portfolio alone to get you hired then you're gonna be waiting for a long time are you ready for this are you ready let's get into it old people you with me you guys with me so i'm gonna do this in parts you're welcome to make notes i'm not giving you notes i'm just speaking to you today but these are parts there's 12 i believe So part one, you are not a photographer anymore.
Steve Carty 2:35
This is something that I want to like ring through your ears. You're not a photographer anymore. This is probably the biggest mindset shift I could give somebody starting today. You're not a photographer anymore. The photography industry didn't disappear. It expanded. Companies don't wake up looking for photographers. They wake up looking for content. They need photographs. They need vertical video. They need behind the scenes footage. They need interviews. They need product demonstrations. They need educational video content. They need social media. They need YouTube. They need LinkedIn. They need email marketing. They need their website updated. And they need trust based. built photography is simply one piece of that very large puzzle that i just described to you and when when i introduce myself to somebody it's not i'm i say i'm a photographer i say i solve
Steve Carty 4:05
communication problems using visual content. I solve communication problems. I say I'm an amplifier. I don't say I'm a photographer. I say I'm an amplifier. Whatever you're doing, I can help you do it louder. I solve communication problems using visual content. That language completely changes how clients see you. So we're trying to do yes or yes. Instead of literally competing against thousands of photographers, You're competing against the few people who actually understand business in photography. Smoke. Mind blown. How many people out there that are actually photographers that actually understand business? That's why 87% of photographers fail in their first two years. you're now competing against very few people who understand business and that's a very new and different marketplace so here's some actionable steps
Steve Carty 5:30
what do I shoot? You need to stop asking what do I shoot and start asking what business problem do I solve? That single question can change your entire career. So that's your actionable step. It's not about what you shoot. It's about what business problem you solve. Part two, you need to stop following trends and start looking for gaps. Most photographers copy, but the real photographers, the photographers that are making money today, they don't copy, they study. Every successful photographer and every successful business starts the same way. I want you to hear this. Every successful business starts the same way. They find something that's missing. They find something that's missing. Then they build it out.
Steve Carty 6:44
Builder. Then they build it. Content gaps. Because that's what we're doing.
