Hello and welcome along to the Canter Rock Rugby Podcast brought to you by the Irish Times. Nathan Johns here with Gordon Darcy and John O'Sullivan on the way for our URC preview. The team news from the opening weekend is in. On Friday night, Mack Hansen returns for Connacht from injury as they play against the Stormers. They've also got debuts for François van Wijk, the prop, with an academy back row, Max Flynn, in line for debut off the bench. Bob Ballacoon is in the starting team for Ulster as Mikey Lowry captains them against Edinburgh, also on Friday night. On Saturday, Leinster have also got two uncapped players, Todd Lawler at fullback and Dylan McNeice, two youngsters. are set for debuts. The likes of Ryan Baird is also going to line out for Leinster as they've gone reasonably experienced, all things considered.
Andrew Porter is also returning from injury alongside Tommy O'Brien and that team. And for Munster, amidst their half-crisis as they welcome Glasgow, JJ Hanahan is fit to play. While former recent, I should say, Ireland Under-20s graduate Charlie O'Shea is on the bench. So there's your team news for the weekend. Without further ado, here's our preview chat with John and Gordon. John Darst, hello. The long pre-season is finished. For the URC, of course, John, you were watching some actual rugby on Sunday in Tala, where the Ireland women's team let slip a 17-point lead to the Irish coached U.S. Eagles. Jack Hanratty of Skerries is their head coach. First damaging defeat of the Scott B. Mandira, would you say?
Yeah, I think it was just the nature of the way they lost the game that was worrying because Ireland obviously don't have physically the biggest side in the world. And when you concede 28 points in, and you can argue the toss whether it was 13 minutes or 15 minutes, but in a very short space of time and the manner in which you consistently concede, then it becomes a bit of an issue. So for those that didn't really see the game, obviously, Ireland led 31-12. They weren't led by 19 points coming into after about 56 minutes. And there'd been a couple of warning shots where the Americans had scored two tries in the first half. Very direct, powerful carrying, got close to the Irish line. Their line-out maul was excellent.
And they scored in a very direct fashion. So that was a kind of warning for Ireland to keep them at arm's length. And by that, I mean, keep them outside their 22 and don't give them access and particularly don't give them access where the setup is a line out. And then Ireland started under a little bit of pressure. The Americans started to carry hard around the side. Ireland conceded penalties. There was an 8-2 penalty count, I think, during that kind of when they conceded that avalanche of points. And they gave the USA access to their 22. And when the USA got in there, they either went kind of 25 meters with a line-out mall or 30 meters from outside and then inside, and then just straight carrying around the side.
