Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Today's episode was made possible by our friends over at Nowscrub.
From The Daily Aus, I'm Lucy Tassel. I'm Zara Seidler. It's Thursday the 14th of May. Here's what's making headlines this evening.
US President Donald Trump has called China's Xi Jinping a great leader and a friend as they kick off two days of talks set to cover trade, the Iran war and US arms sales to Taiwan. It is the first visit by a US President to China since Trump last travelled there in 2017.
He's joined on the trip by Tesla CEO Elon Musk and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, with the US President saying he will ask Xi to quote, open up China to US companies. At a welcome event in Beijing, Trump said to Xi, You're a great leader. Sometimes people don't like me saying it, but I say it anyway. The relationship between China and the USA is going to be better than ever before.
Xi responded by telling Trump, A stable China-US relationship benefits the entire world. When we cooperate, both sides benefit. When we confront each other, both sides suffer.
Former Jackie Lambie Network Senator Tammy Tyrrell has announced she is joining the Labor Party. The Tasmanian won a seat for Lambie's party in 2022 after serving as her staffer for several years. In 2024, Lambie told Tyrrell she was not happy with how she was representing the party, leading to Tyrrell sitting as an independent.
At a press conference on Thursday, Tyrrell said, quote, I want to have a seat at the table where I can make the most change and bring back good stuff to Tasmania.

Chapter 2: What are the key details of Trump's trade talks with China?
I'm not going to apologise to anybody for joining Labor. Tyrrell is the second senator to join Labor since it won the 2025 election following former Green Senator Dorinda Cox. Labor still needs nine more votes from the crossbench or the coalition to pass bills through the upper house.
Six passengers from a cruise ship at the centre of a deadly hantavirus outbreak will soon return to Australia after the government confirmed a flight has been secured for the evacuees. The four Aussie citizens, one permanent resident and one New Zealander who were evacuated from the MV Hondias are due to land in Perth on Friday ahead of a three-week quarantine.
Federal Health Minister Mark Butler confirmed the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade had secured a suitable aircraft and crew to transport the group due to land in the Netherlands at 4pm Sydney time and then take off about 90 minutes later. Butler said the passengers have all tested negative and are showing no symptoms.
They'll wear protective gear on the flight and go straight into a quarantine facility left over from the COVID-19 pandemic.
And today's good news. A Spanish cyclist has won a stage of one of the world's biggest races despite taking an accidental detour and crashing his bike. Igor Arrieta won stage five of the Giro d'Italia in Potenza on Wednesday after one of the most chaotic finishes the race has ever seen.
The 24-year-old crashed on a wet descent with 14 kilometres left, then took a wrong turn at a road split inside the final two kilometres, but still made it across the finish line first. It was his first win ever in a professional race. Meanwhile, Jay Hindley is the best-placed Australian in the Giro, sitting six minutes behind the leaders in the overall standings.
The Giro d'Italia is one of the three major cycling races alongside the Tour de France and the Vuelta de EspaƱa.
