Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Today's podcast was made possible by our friends over at Odoo.
Ready? And good morning. This is the Daily Oz. This is the Daily Oz. This is the Daily Oz. Oh, now it makes sense.
MUSIC
Good morning and welcome to The Daily Oz. It's Thursday the 30th of April. I'm Zara Seidler. I'm Emma Gillespie. This week, two of the biggest tech founders in the world, Elon Musk and Sam Altman, are facing off in court over claims one of them stole a charity. It's a story about how the company behind ChatGPT was first created, who it's serving and what it was actually intended to do.
In today's podcast, we're going to explain the story behind the headlines and what this could mean for the future of one of the biggest AI companies in the world. But first, here's a quick message from our wonderful producer, Rosa.
Hey, my name is Rosa. I'm the multimedia producer here at The Daily Oz, which means I help edit the audio and video content that you're watching right now. Most recently, it means I've helped the team transition from audio podcast to a full time video podcast, which you can watch on Apple or YouTube.
The Daily Oz is always looking for new ways of doing things, but to continue doing that, we need our audience to grow. One way you can help us is by leaving us a five-star review on Apple or commenting on episodes on Spotify. It helps our engagement, which helps new audiences find us. And thank you for being a part of the TDA community.
Zara, I'm so excited to get into this one today because I know very little about this story, just a bit of top line. But what I have seen has made me extremely interested and intrigued.

Chapter 2: What is the court case between Elon Musk and Sam Altman about?
It is a crazy story.
A crazy story and so many moving parts and so many big names that are all involved. So I think maybe that's a good place to start. The characters at the centre of this case and, of course, the company. So let's just quickly go through them before we dive into what's actually happening in court.
Yeah, good idea. So we'll introduce you to the cast. The cast begins with someone called Elon Musk. You might know him. He's very rich. In fact, he's the world's wealthiest man. He co-founded Tesla, SpaceX, and did you know that he was a co-founder of OpenAI? I knew and forgot. Yeah. He's a co-founder of everything.
Chapter 3: How was OpenAI originally intended to operate?
Yeah. That's what I've learned over my time here. PayPal. Everything. Everything. He, yeah, has really had a lot to do with kind of the modern technology scene as we know it. Yep.
You don't become the world's richest man without being pretty busy.
By sitting back and relaxing. That is true. Okay. So that's Elon Musk. Yep. Then on the other side, we have Sam Altman. So Sam Altman is one of the other co-founders of OpenAI. There are a bunch of them, and they're also peripherally involved with this case. But I do just want to focus on these two men, mostly because we know them. We care about them. It makes it easier to comprehend.
So one of the co-founders of OpenAI, also currently the CEO of OpenAI. He was briefly taken out by the board. That's a whole nother podcast.
I was going to say, my awareness of Sam Altman begins at that part of the story.
Yeah, he's been in the headlines a lot, especially in the last couple of weeks. There was a very long profile written about him in The New Yorker by Ronan Farrow. And then his... House was firebombed and then he wrote some stuff. Anyway, getting off track. It's been a busy year for Sam Oldman. It has been. And now he's in court with Elon Musk or against Elon Musk.
And so he is the CEO and they are both the co-founders of OpenAI. If OpenAI is not familiar to you, ChatGPT will be. And ChatGPT is the AI platform that OpenAI owns and launched and has made them one of the biggest companies in the world.
Okay, so the big headline here is that Elon Musk has taken OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to court. Yeah. Why?
Yeah, okay. So to understand why he has taken him to court, you need to understand why OpenAI was created in the first place and what it was intended to do. So it was created as a charity.
