Good evening, friends. Welcome to a special edition of the Don Lemon Show. Now, you may notice that the Don Lemon Show doesn't have Don Lemon on it. That is because he is taking a much needed break, and I'm glad that he is. This is a good reminder for everyone that with all the doom and despair in the news these days, if you're able to take a break, do it. um but what he has done is asked a few of us um to fill in for him this week and so it's me jolly uh hey to the chat i see you guys showing some love i appreciate it i'll be covering in today at five here as well as wednesday at five so you get to see my beautiful mug and today's fit is not a lemon live nation shirt it's a fuck ice shirt and we will be talking about that listen um

What is the 'Big Ugly Bill' and why is it on the Senate floor now?

Jolly Good Ginger 1:09
The big ugly bill is the topic of the conversation today. You may feel like, hey, this is what everybody's talking about. It's because we must keep talking about it right now as we speak. It's in the Senate. And so we're going to update you on where it's at, what's happening. We're going to talk about how. why it's still there. We'll kind of break through this. But during this live today, we want to talk a little bit more about what else is going to happen if this bill passes the Senate. And by the way, I also want to talk about is there any hope of it not passing the Senate? I do have a special guest who'll be joining us around 530 today. Senator Cory Booker has has agreed to join the live. So we'll get a live update from Senator Booker when he gets in here where the bill is right now.
Jolly Good Ginger 2:00
But as of the last time I spoke with the senators, which was about an hour ago, they were. Like the headline says here, they were hunkered down for a long day of votes. So just to explain real briefly, if you're not super, I don't know, literate about the Senate right now, what Senate Democrats are doing is they are proposing a bunch of amendments. And the sole purpose of doing that is these amendments have to be voted on. So the longer that these amendments are voted on. the more it pushes the ultimate vote for the big ugly bill down the road. And so they're expecting to be here past midnight tonight before this bill goes to vote. And the purpose of that is to give you, the American people, a chance to know what this bill does, know who it affects, call your senator and say vote no on the big ugly bill.
Jolly Good Ginger 2:53
With that, Peter is going to be joining us so we can kind of dig into the weeds here where we are and kind of where we're heading. Peter, where are we at?
Peter Rothpletz 3:03
Jolly, Jolly, what is up, brother? We have talked many a time behind the camera, but never, I think, together on camera. It's very good to be with you. I'm sorry, guys, we're not done, but he will be back. As Jolly just said, he is enjoying a much-needed vacation, and he'll be jazzed and superpowered by the time he comes back next Monday. But Jolly, yes, for folks who didn't watch the morning show, I just really want to impress upon you something. This isn't sexy. Legislation, amendments, senators standing and giving speeches, it's not immediately fiery. It's not something that gets your heart pumping, your blood flowing. It should. Jolly and I are going to dig for the next 30 minutes until Cory Booker comes on into just how devastating, just how monstrous and despicable and frankly evil this bill is.
Peter Rothpletz 3:51
I'm sure you've you've heard some of the stats. I'll just go off on a few of them right now. Anywhere between 12 and 17 million Americans are going to lose their health insurance if this thing does indeed inevitably get put into law. It's going to lead to approximately 30 percent higher electricity costs for practically all Americans across the country. It will be the biggest ever transfer in wealth from the rich to the poor in American history. It is. Remember watching Robin Hood, the Disney movie when you're growing up or putting it on for your kids. It's the exact fucking opposite. It is evil.
Jolly Good Ginger 4:29
Yeah. But Charlie, let me cut you off because I want to explain something. Because sometimes I think when we hit these bullet points, people don't really know what we're talking about.
