Members of the Congressional Black Caucus condemned a bipartisan resolution that was passed today to memorialize Charlie Kirk, saying that the measure validated Kirk's beliefs and legitimized, quote, racist... Harmful and fundamentally un-American ideals. In a statement following the House's approval of the resolution, which received support from more than 90 Democrats, it was bipartisan. The caucus denounced political violence and the killing of Kirk, but said individuals must condemn violence, quote, without abandoning our right to speak out against ideas that are inconsistent with our values as Americans.
It is very hurtful to a lot of people. it's hurtful that he died and it is tragic as, and obviously, but it's also hurtful because there are many people who believe that Charlie Kirk or his language indicated that he didn't think gay people should exist in the sense they didn't, shouldn't have the right to be married. And he spoke out against that. So same-sex marriage, women, black women, The Civil Rights Act of 1964, which I'll tell you about. So this is what the caucus outlined of Kirk's past comments that they said that they strongly disagreed with, listing his belief that the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which ended racial segregation in this country, saying that it was a mistake. His denial that systemic racism exists.
His promotion of the Great Replacement Theory and his offensive claims about Justice Katonji Brown Jackson, Michelle Obama, and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Joy Reid, I believe, that they were lacking... Adequate cognitive ability or brain processing power, as he put it. 42 members of the CBC voted against the resolution, making up to 72 percent of the 58 Democrats who oppose the measure. Five members of the caucus voted yes on the resolution, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Another four members of the caucus voted present and four members didn't vote at all. Congresswoman AOC had a lot to say about it. This is a little bit of a longer clip, but she took to the floor to voice her opinion on this.
And by doing so, she spoke for many Americans, especially Americans who are part of underserved communities in this country. Here's Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
