That is a question of those questions economists are asking right now after Donald Trump reversed course, broke his own promises by pausing most of his so-called reciprocal tariffs today.
However, he also announced an increase of the tariffs on China. to 125%. And this is what he put up on his own social media platform. There it is. It's long, so bear with me, folks, okay? Announcing the moves on Truth Social, the president declared, quote, based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the world's markets, I am hereby raising the tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately. At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S. and other countries is no longer sustainable or acceptable. Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 countries have called representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury and the USTR to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to trade.
Trade barriers, tariffs, currency manipulation, and non-monetary tariffs. And that these countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States. I have authorized a 90-day pause and a substantially lowered reciprocal tariff during the period of 10%, also effective immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Okay, Jesus, show is over. That is so long. He's making a lot of stuff up. Actually, he caved. I'm going to show it to you. I'm going to prove it to you how he caved here. And I think that there are adults in the room who came in finally, and Scott Bessin, I believe, is the Treasury Secretary, who came in and said, you got to stop this.
You got to get Howard Lutnick out of your ear. You have got to do something. And then they said, you know what? You got to make it sound like a win for us. Or maybe the folks who weren't in Donald Trump's ear and they didn't tell him, they said, Scott, if you want to do this, you got to make it. We've worked with this guy for a long time. Make it sound like a win. And then he'll go for it. So we have the perfect guest to discuss this. All right. A brilliant guest. As a matter of fact, Mr. David from his series, a staff writer at The Atlantic. And what's more. OK, this is important.
