Good afternoon, everybody. It is the Fork Report. Neil Saavedra, your friendly neighborhood Fork Reporter, just celebrating food on the Fork Report for three hours. No other show does that that I'm aware of. I mean, there's one hour food type shows on the radio, maybe two hours. We go three hours to celebrate food. And I'm not a food critic, but I'll tell you what I like and why I like it.
Not a chef, but I love cooking and grilling at home. You know that. And it's just a place for her to celebrate those things that come all together in food. You know, what we eat and celebrate with, what we, you know, even at a point of mourning, you know, food is a big deal. Wedding food is a big deal. All these things come together around something we celebrate.
So we kind of shut off the loud noise of the news and the heaviness of the news and just come together and talk about things that we dig, and that's food. One of the kindest compliments I can receive is one of the kindest compliments I can give. And the term is a Renaissance man, but it's not just a man, it's a person. And often it goes to having a plethora of interests.
But to me, it's beyond that. It's about living life to the fullest, being curious, poking around, asking questions, learning new things. And boy, from doing a little research on Nick Greenberg, my next guest, He falls into that category in a big old way. He's a versatile bassist.
He's a composer, author, performed at a mess of different musical gigs and occasions, Broadway shows, even has done some polka. I have a feeling we're not going to have enough time to talk about all this, but he's also been somebody who was a former chocolatier. He, a winemaker, award-winning home brewer, lives in Cincinnati with his wife and his golden retriever. You got to love that.
And it has a new book that's a novel, but ties into one of the most curious stories ingredients known to man uh welcome nick greenberg uh talking about his new book buried treasure uh unearths the cutthroat culinary world of rare truffles how are you great how you doing neil i'm quite well what a cv you have um uh why why truffles in your new book uh it's a novel correct It is, yes.

Chapter 2: Why did Nick Greenberg choose to write about truffles?
I'm Neil Saavedra. Thanks for hanging today. It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, wherever your neighborhood might be, unless it's on the northeast side of the country. Probably not so beautiful right now, but it is here in our overtaxed, pothole-ridden neighborhood. Homeless infested. Boy, that was dire. Anywho, that's not what this place is for.
This is for loving on each other and enjoying food is what we do. We're going to be giving away a pair of three-day general admission passes to Beach Life Festival happening in Maine, Redondo Beach, in just a moment. I'll tell you how to do that. And back when I was like 13, believe it or not, I was in a punk rock band, 13, 14 years old or whatever it was. And we were on a record label. Don't ask me how any of this was legal. I look back on it now. And with the engineer that recorded our quote-unquote music, Little Punkers, his name was Philco. And I always loved that because of the obvious play on it.

Chapter 3: What makes truffles so valuable and sought after?
So that's that. I just created a new image, a new logo that I put up on Instagram there that kind of is reminiscent of kind of a tongue-in-cheek version of a 50s-esque music. Kind of look at Savco. But that's just for a fun creative outlet for me right now. And I'd love for you to join me there. And I'd love to learn about what you do.

Chapter 4: How do truffles differ from other culinary ingredients?
And we're like, hey, we don't need the breadsticks. Just make it taste good.

The name is slightly clunky, Better Goods. You know, it almost seems like somebody moved to this country a week ago and said, here, let's go with this. Much more better pizza. Yeah. There's a, I think it's a Chinese restaurant on Van Nuys Boulevard. And they used to have one on Wilshire as well. And the name of the place was OK Chinese Food. And you eat it. How was it? It was okay.
It's like the Nova when they tried selling the Nova in Mexico. Nova doesn't go. Everybody's like, well, what? I'm not buying that. But yeah, there are... You know, what's funny is there was a... Gosh, an Asian restaurant of some kind around the corner from the old KFI building in K-Town. You used to work out there too. Right. And it was right there on 6th and Ardmore. And it was...
like the same word said three different ways, three different times. It was like a cafe diner deli or cafe diner. It was like three cafe diner restaurant.
Well, you remember, you'll remember this place. There was a stationary store, right? Where you and I worked a block from each other for four years, right? Ardmore, Normandy, Wilshire, that whole area. And there was a stationary store on the corner there called Office Good. Well, it was good. It was a melting pot, man. That's right. Exactly. A melting pot. God bless them.
Everyone's welcome. Katie's Pizza. That's the other one. Katie's Pizza and Pasta. And I think I find it at small stores. I think the only big chain store that I've seen it at is Target. So go to a Target in the frozen section.
I was in Ralph's in Encino about a year ago, just picking up some stuff. It was 11 o'clock at night. I had three frozen pizzas in my cart and a 12-pack of beer. And I ran into an old high school friend that I knew from high school. And I hadn't seen this guy in probably, I don't know, 10, 15 years. And he said, hey, how's it going? I said, good. And he goes, so you're not married anymore?

Chapter 5: What unique challenges do truffle hunters face?
You say, hey, I'm still getting it. Did you see the guy who opens up a box and he and he looks at it and it's a pregnancy test and she says, what do you think? And he's like, well, why did you come over? And and she and he says, you know, why are you here? You know, I got a week trip coming up. My grandmother's not well. She's susceptible to things. Why did you come over here?
And she and she says, what do you think that is? And he says, that's a covid positive test, isn't it?
Oh, my God.
Oh, my gosh. You know what I would have done? I would have said, yes, it is. I'd go. Well, no, the end of that joke is not funny. That's classic, man. You are not going to proliferate, sir, on my watch. Thank you, sir.
