White stripes there on the Hodaki Big Show this Monday evening. The time is 5.53.
Mike Minogue 0:12
Fellas, a lot of texts coming in on 3483 asking why Mogi sounds terrible. Mogi, your voice is a bit weird today. What's the deal with that?
Karl Urban 0:22
Well, I've got a medical condition, Keezy. Some would say it's been a backbone, and that's one of the things. Sure. But the other thing that I've got going on, as you know, is I've been suffering for probably four years now with a pretty severe ear, nose, and throat issue. I got sinusitis probably four years ago, and then that's just gotten worse and worse every year.

Why does Mogi’s voice sound so bad and what medical history explains it?

Karl Urban 0:45
I've sort of been on three or four rounds of antibiotics every single year. I've been on medications. I've been on nasal sprays, all sorts of different things, haven't I?
Mike Minogue 0:52
Yes.
Karl Urban 0:52
So I've sort of been sick every year for six months of the year. This year has been better.
Mike Minogue 0:56
Yeah, you've been really good this year.
Karl Urban 0:58
I haven't been as bad as other years. But I've had an appointment with an ear, nose and throat specialist. I want to get in there and see a specialist, Keezy. And I'm still waiting for that appointment. Four months. Wow. Only takes four months to get in there. So that's... Everything's weak and sweet. When everything's going to be tickety-boo again, probably. Yeah, that's right. I'll be brand new by then. But at this rate, maybe not. So anyway, over the weekend, I had a bit blocked up trying to go to sleep. And so I just thought to myself, I'll get on this Otraven spray. Now, I swear by this stuff. You put a couple of sprays up your honker there, and it completely clears your sinuses out, no matter how stuff's up there.
Karl Urban 1:33
I've used it before. It's amazing. It is absolutely incredible. It's a revelation when you discover it.
Mike Minogue 1:38
It's a steroid?
Karl Urban 1:39
It is a steroid, and what it does is it contracts the blood vessels in your nasal cavities, in your sinuses there.
Jason Hoyte 1:46
There'd be some big bastard bloody blood vessels in there with a U2. With us. With all B and K over there. Honk as you're running.
Karl Urban 1:53
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Mike Minogue 1:57
And...
Karl Urban 1:58
And so it constricts that. The problem with it is when you use it, you get a bounce back, what they call a bounce back, which means potentially it'll get worse on the other side, but generally only if you overuse it, so you use it for more days than you should. So that was the first day that I'd used it in a couple of months. But I woke up the next day and I sounded like this.
Jason Hoyte 2:14
Wow.
Karl Urban 2:14
Bloody beautiful. Cough. You get a post-nasal drip, they call it, Keezy, which is where you get this penis snot dripping down the back of your throat and it irritates. Oh, that's so great. Hang on a minute, just a snot just down the back of your throat there and it irritates the throat there. So you're coughing, you've got the runny nose, then you've got a full-on headache and full congestion in the sinuses as well. So it's a horrible bastard of a thing and it recurs. So what I've worked out, is it's actually that the problem is the medicine. Yeah. So I've got to just backbone my way through any time I get these congested sinuses and not take the medicine because if I take the medicine, it just ends up making it worse if you're going to wrap your head around that.
Mike Minogue 2:56
Is that from a sort of, you know, a recent history of maybe using it too much, those medicines?
Karl Urban 3:01
It's potentially that. Yeah, well, it makes sense because it's also your Sudafed and your cold medications. They do the same thing. They contract those blood vessels in your honker and, yeah, it makes it worse.
Jason Hoyte 3:17
And, I mean, you're sucking up a lot of stuff in there.
Mike Minogue 3:20
Yeah, yeah, totally.
Jason Hoyte 3:21
You know, I mean, it is a huge vacuum. It is. It is.
Mike Minogue 3:25
Well, look, I'll carry on.
Jason Hoyte 3:28
What I'm just saying, I mean, there's a lot going up there. Yeah, yeah, yeah. There's a big amount of airflow.
Mike Minogue 3:35
It's got a big honker, eh, James? Big, big honker.
Jason Hoyte 3:38
Well, that's good. I was talking about both of you, but yeah.
Mike Minogue 3:40
To be honest, I was concerned that you'd just been on the personal weekend and this was sort of... Oh, no, no, no.
Karl Urban 3:45
No, just Friday night I got to bed about 7 o'clock in the morning and I was thinking to myself, jeez, my nose is feeling a bit stuffy, eh?
