I think you're fascinating. I love the guests that you have on. I watch you all the time and I think you ask really insightful questions. And the truth of the matter is, is that I usually learn something when I'm listening to you. I really appreciate that, man. Thank you.
What do you have to gain from coming on though?
Well, for me it's a a opportunity to talk to people who I think have an enormous amount of influence in a uh in a category of listeners that most of the people that are my age and and uh you know, political persuasion don't necessarily have a chance to talk to. And um I know that you guys are equal opportunity in terms of you know, and apolitical and most everything. But um I just think that you uh do a really incredible job of like asking really insightful questions. So, you know, maybe I get to learn something myself. More than anything, that's what it's about. More than anything, that's what it's about.
Yeah. What's the message that you hope viewers could take away from this?
I think that we're fed, particularly at this moment in time, this uh algorithm, that we're so divided that things are so desperate that we are um on the verge of a civil war, so to speak, uh literally or figuratively. And while all of that may seem true and um I I I truly believe that uh that our algorithms are not our reality. I think that if people just think about themselves in their own uh personal lives and think about their neighbors and think about the aspirations of their their neighbors in their community, the truth is that we sh all share far more in common than we do um have uh differences with each other.
One of the things that I've noticed you've done a lot of podcasts recently. You've talked about a lot as well. And when we were doing research for our episode, we didn't want to cover the same things that you've talked about every single time. And I am curious, what is something you wish other people had asked you?
We kind of always touch this uh topic of universal pain that everyone experiences, but I don't really ever get to go in depth about it. I remember on I I did Bill Maher's show and I like Bill and but it's a it's a ten minute format and it's not a two hour format which doesn't lend itself to kind of really kind of in depth discussions. But I said to him, I said, I don't think we get to talk about issues like grief. And addiction and trauma nearly enough. And he goes, I think we talk about it all the time. And in one respect, it's true, is that it's something that gets mentioned, but never really in depth. And I think that's one of the ways that I have uh been able to connect with people more than anything, is not they they don't associate out with me.
Um uh instead they identify with me because of my experiences. And so th not everybody was a a addicted to crack cocaine and not everybody had my experience in terms of that becoming a widely, widely talked about public person. But everybody has a brother that has uh you know, so so to speak, uh th that has uh dealt with addiction.
