Good morning and welcome to Jags AM. It's still a bit quiet in the National Football League, though things are picking up this week. The combine is underway. Teams are maneuvering to get themselves ready for the start of the new league year, which is just a few short weeks from now. And obviously, preparations continue for free agency in the draft. We've got a big Jags AM for you. Mark Duffner is back this week. John Ogier is standing by with his usual brand of intellect and witty repartee. So let's get right to our big things and we'll start with no tags. Now, you may have seen that last night the Atlanta Falcons applied the tag to the franchise tag to their tight end.
Why are the Jaguars not tagging Travis Etienne Jr. and Devin Lloyd?
The Jaguars as of yet have not used a tag on either running back Travis Etienne Jr. or All-Pro linebacker Devin Lloyd. And John, it doesn't appear, at least it doesn't appear now, that the Jaguars are going to use a tag on either of those players. Yeah, look, anything can change. It's the NFL. It's a free agency. They have until next Tuesday, I believe, to do it. I don't get the idea their player will be back, unfortunately, because I like them both. A Devon would be a really big tag number, whether it's transition, which is a little less, or franchise. And I just don't get the vibe that they're going to use it with Travis.
What is the mindset of a coach when losing key players?
To me, Duff, Travis makes the most sense because of that running back position. It is often a draft and wear you out position. And I don't mean to say it cruelly like that. But fifth year, you get into your sixth year with a franchise tag, maybe that's the limit of real running back effectiveness. So some teams do it that way. I'm not sure I see that as the Jaguars' maneuver this time. Yeah, I don't know what their thoughts will be as far as that's concerned, but I'm with you in terms of what the league and what other clubs do in the past. I know that he certainly was a very versatile player, very productive player. So some consideration, I think, will be given towards Travis in that regard. Mark, take us into the mindset of a coach.
How is the Jaguars' approach to free agency different this year?
You have all pro caliber players. Etienne scored 13 touchdowns. He wasn't all pro, but he was really important to the Jaguars. And of course, Devin Lloyd had such a monster season. What's the mindset of a coach is they have to get ready to play without these guys. Well, you know, first the mindset is you hope you can play with those guys. You know, I'd be lighting candles in church and saying the rosary in hopes that we could figure out a way to get it done. But, you know, when you lose these guys and you're going to work like crazy to find ways that you can replace them, this roster is – has good depth, has productive players, so I think a lot of it is in-house. But, you know, they'll look at free agency.
What are the biggest needs for the Jaguars' AFC South rivals?
You'll be scouring the player selection as far as that's concerned. You'll be looking at the draft in terms of where we could possibly add players that could fill the void left by their absence. Brian, people have, you know, in my writing about these two guys, people have sort of accused me of being too casual about, well, it looks like they're going to be gone, they'll replace them. It's a draft and replace league sometimes, so you have to deal with that reality, particularly Travis. They're going to miss some things about him if he's not here. I don't necessarily know that it's the every down stuff, but some of those runs you looked at, he has really matured as a runner. There's stuff that he does during the play, some moves, some extra vision stuff downfield.
Not every bat can do that. So I think you're going to miss some big plays. A 71-yard run with another back last year might have been a 30-yard run.
How do the Jaguars plan to fill gaps left by departing players?
So I do think... Look, anytime you let a guy go, it's risk. You're going to lose something. To me, that's what they might lose with Travis, but they'll pick something else up in whatever back they get. For sure. Everybody's got strengths and weaknesses. I would just say listening to everybody and observing the evolution, I guess, of this past season with Travis, he did gain.
