Welcome to a podcast with Donet, but at least not yet. I'm Brian Sexton, and this is my 32nd season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. But it's the first where I will host and produce the Public Tailgate show and countdown to kickoff, which means I'm doing a lot of interviews during the week. JP Shadrick started sharing all of them in this format, and I like the idea, so I thought I would steal it and, in a way, make it my own. I'll not only share the unedited version of my weekly. Weekly interviews, I'll also offer you a couple of thoughts on the upcoming game, the season, the historical context, and whatever else comes to mind. Maybe you'll like it, maybe you'll think it's overkill. Both responses entirely correct and absolutely welcome.

That's right, Brian Big Mouth. You know I've got one. So let's get started with one of the big stories this summer, and that's the rebuild of the Jaguars running game. Look, it started strong last year, but faded and fell off the cliff during that eight-game winning streak. They averaged just 91 yards on the ground, but only 3.3 per carry. They weren't efficient, they weren't successful. That they were able to keep winning is a testament to the offense that head coach Liam Cohen built. But they had to fix it. So they rebuilt the position around second year running back Bascial Tootin, and then added free agent hammer Chris Rodriguez, who was with Cohen during his time at the University of Kentucky.
We'll get our first look at what the head coach wants on Sunday against the Browns. But center Robert Hainsey arrived in Jacksonville with Cohen and he knows what Cohen wants. So I asked him what does success look like against the Browns on Sunday? There's lots of numbers that you look at in the run game. Yards per carry, total yards, all those things. As an offensive lineman, what do you look for?

As far as like evaluating ourselves, you mean? Yeah. How do you evaluate a good performance in the running game?
Yeah, I mean I think number one it's you're looking at were we efficient. And by efficient they can that can mean a lot of different things. But starting with are we getting hats on hats like on the right guy? And honestly, more than anything I should have started with is just uh does it look more physical on tape? If you can see yourself on tape as the more physical team, that usually is gonna equate to a good running performance and a win, which is the most important thing that we can do. So I think like that's probably that's probably Um not all runs like that. the numbers aren't always gonna be perfect. You wanna hit you wanna see some explosives. Like you get a couple of explosives and your yards per carry goes way up, but you could also have a couple of explosives and the rest of your runs weren't that good.
And th th those numbers just get skewed a lot. It's a really a total picture and I think it like I said, number one, physicality, number two, are we um is everyone getting on the right guy from the O line tight ends, how are the running backs setting things up, just like the tech the technique of it?
It sounds like a silly question to ask it anyway. How d how do you win the physical battle? Is that a mindset? Is that something you do all summer long? How do you how do you make sure you're the more physical team?
Mindset, yeah. I it's really it's it's a choice. Uh when you come out there just choosing hard every play and pushing yourself past that last little bit to to beat the guy across from you. They're not Everyone says they wanna do it but it's it's really hard to do. When you can do that constantly and when we have each other to lean on, that makes it a lot easier. And that's why it's always a a five guy thing on the offensive line when it comes to the physicality and just reminding each other like, Hey, we gotta keep going, this is this is who we are. That's that's what's gonna get us that edge.
