Exactly where we were 25 years ago today, and what was one of the most seismic events, arguably one of the defining events of the 21st century so far, the attack on New York and on the Pentagon of 9-11. And we're going to talk to two people who were in Manhattan on the day of the attack on the Twin Towers, our own Marion McCoan, who was there. As a reporter, and who went to the scene and saw the towers crumble. And also Paul McCormick, who was a policeman working that day in Manhattan and who has been living with the consequences of serving that day ever since. But before we talk to them, let's just hear some audio from the day. First of all, this is while attempting to make contact with Flight 11, the first to hit the world.
Trade Center, an air traffic controller heard the lead hijacker Mohammed Atta talk to the passengers.
Is that America eleven trying to call? Buddy. We have some planes that stay quiet and you'll be okay. We're returning to the airport. And uh who's trying to call me here? American eleven, are you trying to call? Nobody moves. Everything will be okay. If you try to make any move, you'll dangerous yourself and the airplane. Just stay quiet.
And this now is archive footage of an air traffic controller who spotted the second plane United Airlines Flight one hundred seventy five as it rapidly descended towards the twin towers.
Hey, can you look out your window right now? Can you s can you see God about four thousand feet about five east of the airport right now? Looks like he's Yeah, I see him. You see guy look is he descending for the building also? He's descending really quick too, yeah. Well that's twenty five hundred feet now. He just dropped eight hundred feet in like a like one s one sweep. That's that's another situation. Who what kind of one point is that? Can you guys tell? I don't know. Another one just hit the building. Wow. Wow.
How did the archival audio capture the moments when the planes hit the towers?
No one just hit the worst fate. The whole building just came apart. Holy smokes.
And this is archived from reporter Bette Fertig, who was on the site of the World Trade Centre and who kept recording. In this you hear from Fire Marshal Thomas Williams, Port Authority employee Loretta Williams, who was in the North Tower and who ran down eighty two flights of stairs, and police captain Charles Dyas, who was pulled from debris as the ben buildings fell.
Thank God I just got out. I just didn't know where I was. I was praying to God and my family. Were you able to save anybody? I helped one lady up but I really don't know what happened to her. It was just total chaos. I just heard an explosion. I just looked in the the hallway and ev the steel and everything just collapsed. And we was trying to get out and when we was on our way down the stairs, that's when I I felt the shaking again. We were just trying to get out, that's all. Don't even remember her name. We helped each other out. She had a flashlight. And we made our way through the darkness. and picked up some stragglers on the way. Yeah, there were people injured all over the place crying for help, screaming for help.
We couldn't see in front of our face. It was total darkness. It's like the sun was just covered over.
Marion McKeon, you were working for the Sunday Tribune newspaper in New York at the time, and when the first plane crashed into the first of the towers, you headed straight for the Twin Towers. What do you remember of what you saw that day?
That's right, Matt. And um I I'd picked up a call from Martin Olden newsletter at the Tribune at the same time and so I just literally ran out the door.
