Why should I consider a projector over a large TV for home viewing?
The last word on today FM. Andy O'Dunn, who's with us for Tech Thursday. We're only a few months away, now a couple of months away from our big annual tech show. And I suspect things like television, sound bars and projectors will feature prominently what people might be looking to buy before we get to Christmas. But you still have to convince me, Andy, why use a projector?
It's a really good idea. Good question, Matt, but it's a great idea. So we want bigger TVs, but big T new TVs, modern TVs, are massive, fifty-five, sixty-five, seventy-five, ninety inches. And that's a big T V. It involves quite a few cables and you gotta put it somewhere. And what most people do is they put it in a corner of the room.
If they have a room big enough and it doesn't end up dominating the room.
But that's what happens in modern Irish homes is and you end up with this huge TV, maybe sixty five inches in the corner. It's on a stand with a few um boxes below it, and of course it's cutting off an entire corner of the room and it becomes a focal point. Also, it's pretty messy because we've all got the wires out the back, you got some headphone connections, you're connected to a multi channel or cable box, all of that stuff. So that's one of the reasons. Reclaim your living room, I would say, but also there are technical reasons. And you know, to get a fully immersive cinema experience on a television, you have to spend a couple of thousand euros to get a great TV to do that.
What are the practical benefits of using a projector instead of a TV?
But you can buy a projector relatively cheaply. Also, there's good good um kind of thought to have around the fact that televisions do blast this kind of high-intensity direct light, this blue wave. wavelength light straight into your retinas, whereas project projectors work via diffused, reflected light and they are much easier to watch. So you will feel you will fall asleep probably quicker after watching a movie.
Yeah, but are they not complicated to use in that you possibly need to mount some sort of screen to project the image onto rather than trusting the actual wall that you have which might have You know, the you might have the central heating there or you might have paintings or whatever of pictures. So you need to have some sort of screen which you have to mount to put up. And then is it difficult to connect the projector to the source of your television?
It's not. And an electrician will do it all for you pretty easily because I would suggest some people what they do is they put their projectors on the ground, they put them on um maybe a sideboard at the back of the room. The ideal thing, I think, is to put them up around the m um the middle of the room because you have these short throw and ultra short throw projectors. So you two screws into the ceiling. Um the electrician can use the same cable that the light uses, same power, and then get a project or get a screen. screen and you can buy a screen for a hundred Euros, but maybe spend twice that and get a retractable one so that it all disappears neatly and no one even knows it's a a a a big screen.
So just pull it down whenever you need to use Exactly. Okay. Well give us some examples of projectors that you think might be uh enjoyed by people. You've got one that's had the XG Me Mogo three Pro.
And this has really caught on. XGME is a brand I didn't know about a couple of years ago. Now they are huge. And um the Mogo 3 Pro, about five hundred euros to buy it. And this uh first of all, Matt, it's r it's a really pretty looking projector, really nicely designed, and it's kind of a huge step beyond those old blocky projectors. So um you can get up to a hundred inch screen. Projected from it, and it's 1080p. So that's good HD resolution. And it has a um a rotating gimbal. So the reason that's useful is it can turn around and you have kind of instant ceiling projection if you're having a party or something like that. If you're having a 21st up on the roof, you project um all the photos from the Family Photo album.
