And so the netball story doesn't appear to be getting any better this morning as we find out the teams owned by Netball New Zealand, so that's the Stars, Tactics and Magic, are not extending contracts past the end of this month. Maya Wilson, former Silver Fern, current goal shoot for the Northern Mystics is with us. Maya, morning. Morning, Mike. How are you going? Very well. So the Mystics are OK as far as you understand things.
Yeah, I think some things that people don't know in terms of the governance structure. So the teams like the Northern Mystics, the Southern Steel and the Central Pulse are mostly controlled by the zone boards that they are under. So my team, the Northern Mystics, are managed by the Northern Zone. However, teams like the Stars... So even though you're OK, is there a competition of three if three don't make it? Well, I'm not sure what that looks like at the moment. From what I've been told from our players' association, they are trying to get into the bargaining room with all the parties, in particular Netball New Zealand. I think there is a decent alignment between the players and the teams, from what I've been told.
But at the moment, there's still uncertainty. But at the end of the day, we just want to have a really good elite competition of netball in this country. Yeah. At the moment, there's so much opportunities I personally find to make it financially viable, commercial opportunities.
How is the Northern Mystics’ governance different from the Stars, Magic and Tactix?
It's about making sure that we can get all stakeholders on the table at the same time.
Well, that's encouraging to hear. So you're bullish about your sport because this has been going on for a while, hasn't it?
Yeah, it's probably a process in particular that we've been in this for the last probably three or so years. I feel like netball in this country, we just look at the participation rates and it's one of the highest grassroots sports within our country. I think there's so much opportunity for movement there. And for me, I just would like to see all those little kids that are down at the netball courts every Saturday still having a dream to play in an elite competition here in New Zealand as well as become a soul fern.
Are you hopeful? I mean, if you can see the light, what about the rest? Can everyone else see the light or not?
Oh, I feel like we're sort of a little bit of, I guess we're dispersed in amongst, we're out of our competition season because it's finished this year. You have the Silver Ferns who will be starting their campaign and Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. And then you've sort of got the rest of us that are at home still trying to train. A lot of us are back into work and having to study. So I guess for now we are striving to have some certainty in terms of what 2020
