Hello and welcome to a very exciting episode of The Moment today because I've got someone I love catching up with. Only seems to happen when he's got records out, but that's enough because to get access to one of Australia's greatest songwriters is oh it's a dream and it's a great luxury. And I'm very, very privileged to have Paul Kelly joining us today on the moment. Paul's released well, it's kind of a re-release of a record he put out last year called 70. So he did the Adele thing and gave it an age number as a representation of songs that he's written around this age, and it's a beautiful, beautiful record. But what he's done is released a deluxe edition of it and he's added Old school things like liner notes, remember those, all the lyrics, lots of photos of who's involved, the guests, the special guests, the band, everything.
It has that feeling of a special object that you used to feel when you got a brand new record, if you were lucky enough to experience that when you were growing up. So that's what he's done. I've got lots to talk to him about, about creativity, about the different stages of life. So much, so much to discuss. Paul Kelly, lovely to see you. It's been ages.

I feel like we only ever catch up at interviews, so I thought I'd have to make this one happen for the deluxe reissue of seventy, which was a beautiful record that came out last year and marked your your seventieth year. Mm-hmm. It's had a year to live. How has it lived in the world before you gave it the re release with the orange vinyl and the liner notes and all the beautiful things that come with a deluxe re shoe?
Yeah, it's it's hard to tell. I mean just it generally hear from people who who really like the record or comment on particular particular songs. I think the the the best thing about this record in terms of response has been people reacting to different songs or people s talking about I love this song, you know, Ada May or you know, The Body Keeps the Score or uh Reader wrote a letter or they uh people seem to have all different Favorites.
Yeah. You've got very specific ideas of how an album should be put together and listened to and I love that. Like there's real care put into it in a time when a lot of people are saying, Oh, we're not listening to albums anymore, but in actual fact they are. Like those Taylor Swift fans are listening to those Taylor Swift albums from cover to cover, like it and reading every single word. So I feel like you've always kept solid on that and it's paid off in bucket loads in that you've always respected your audience and thought that they gave your work the care that It should have and and you cared for them in the same way. Like I I don't know. Do you feel like It people still feel that way about albums?
I think some do, some don't. I mean it's the way I it's the way I came up. So you sort of your tastes and your inclinations and everything that all formed by by by that. So, you know, when I was growing up it was albums. And uh the other thing about, you know, buying albums when when you you couldn't afford to you had to really be careful about buying an album 'cause it was Um you could probably only have enough money to buy wine a month or whatever, you know. And uh you'd you'd have to sort of you would get even though you even if you might not like the album first listen, you'd you would play it 'cause you spent you spent your money on it, so you'd you'd play it and play it and play it until it sort of it re rev revealed more to you. So and I think and then you know what happened obviously with with streaming and choices and people could just pick songs here and pick songs there and they could range over a whole range across, you know, genres and across decades.
