Vinny, take me back to September eleventh, two thousand and one. What were you doing on that Tuesday morning?
Yeah, so if um just thinking back twenty-five years ago, uh it was a Tuesday morning, uh it's players day off on Tuesday.
Why did Vinny decide the team should not play the scheduled game that week?
A lot of the guys were in getting a workout, watching some film, getting treatments from the game before it, you know, mixing. uh bruises. Um sitting in the training room and Uh of course they have a TV in there, we're watching TV and and all of a sudden there's a uh you know news break and we see what's happening.
What did Vinny experience when he visited Ground Zero a few days later?
Uh an airplane had crashed into one of the the towers, the uh World Trade Center towers. And there was a good number of guys in there. And we really didn't know what to make of it.
What piece of Ground Zero did Vinny bring home and why?
We thought maybe pilot error, uh, you know, just kind of watching, uh, being close to home. You know, I think we're only 15 miles from uh from where we our practice facility was at Hofstra on Long Island to the city.
How did the Jets use the Patriots game to provide hope after the tragedy?
And um, all of a sudden one of our uh players says, Hey, there's another plane, and they can see it on the the on the the screen behind the uh both the World Trade Center Twin Towers And we just st all started watching this little uh speck on the screen get closer and closer, and then all of a sudden you see an explosion. It it the second plane uh ran into and and crashed into the other tower. Uh and then at that point we all realized this is no accident. Something's going on. Uh we all watched for a few more minutes uh and then realized that hey maybe we need to get home to our families. I called my wife right away, asked her to get her kids out of school, didn't know if she had seen the news or not, so I explained to her what was going on.
She ran down to the school, got our kids out, as many other parents were doing as well. Um so it was uh quite uh Quite scary, unnerving, um concerning. time where we were all uh in probably disbelief, but certainly uh unaware of what was to come next.
I have chills just listening to you talk about that. I remember The PR offices at Wee Build Bank Hall were adjacent to the training room you're talking about. And Frank Ramos, the former PR director, said, Turn on the TV. A plane had just hit one of the towers. And we turned on the news and thought there is no way this could have happened. Um so you tell me then Tuesday afternoon. Yeah. You're a husband, you're a father, and you also grew up in New York. What do you do with your family in the hours immediately after?
Uh so shortly after me getting home and getting the kids home and and just kind of, you know, watching things unfold, uh we I s we started my um I started calling my my my family uh who all lived on Long Island. Uh-huh. My mother, my sisters, um, uh, and and their extended families. And they all came over to my house and we all kind of watched the news unfold throughout the day. We were together, um, all very nervous, scared, uh, whatever that emotion is for each of us. Uh we were all going through it. Um, but certainly there was um uh a big concern for uh not knowing what was coming next. That's why we we were We thought we are we should all be together. Um, you know, it's something that uh America really has have never has never experienced, you know.
