What are the latest Steelers signings and departures?

Donnie 0:00
Per usual, the football team in town did give us something to talk about this morning. Don't worry, they won't take up the entire show. Just part of it. We will move around a little bit. The Penguins fell in Vegas last night. Fortunately, the out-of-town scoreboard was kind to them. One of the Pirates young pitchers dazzled. In a spring training outing last night, we get to all of that. We also have a couple of people, a couple of Steelers that departed yesterday. If you're watching on YouTube or on our X page at 93.7 The Fan, you just saw there. Austin Bechtold adjusting the fathead of Joe Starkey. He is out today. Donnie, football with you until 2. Off the top, presented by J.P. Roofing and Siding.

How does Jaquan Brisker's signing impact the Steelers' defense?

Donnie 1:03
Went through a little bit of what we will be getting to. We're going to have the first half of a six-pack now, second half of a six-pack later. Later on, because thank you, we do have a nice little Friday show lined up without Joe, who is back in Buffalo this weekend. The Steelers made some waves yesterday. A certain quarterback made some waves yesterday. that we will get to. We have the high school head coach of the Steelers' newest acquisition joining us in 25 minutes. As always, Ray Fittipaldo joins at 11. Noah Hiles will join at noon. Jesse Marshall hops on at 1 o'clock to talk a little Penguins after their loss in Vegas last night. And you can always join in at 412-928-9370. Maybe you're out and about listening on the radio, the Odyssey app, or as already mentioned, one of the folks that watches the program on our YouTube or Xtreme.

I love what the Steelers did. Last night, it was one of the players that I wanted them to bring in. He was one of the players on my free agent wish list that I put out there a couple of weeks ago, which, in fact, they have now signed two of those guys.

What makes Jaquan Brisker a versatile player for the Steelers?

Donnie 2:35
First, it was Rico Dowdle the other night. And then last night, the Steelers signed Jaquan Brisker to a one-year deal worth $5.5 million. Okay. The former Gateway Gator, the former Penn State Nittany Lion, and the former Chicago Bear is now coming back home to play in the Steel City. And I really don't mind if he plays the same position as somebody like Deshaun Elliott because that's what it shows on the depth chart because he's flexible. He can move around. You can do different things with him in the defense, kind of like what they were already doing with the safeties that they did have, Elliott and Jalen Ramsey. We saw Ramsey play multiple positions last season. We have seen Deshaun Elliott be somebody that has moved all over the place on the Steelers' defense, and I think that is one of the reasons why he has so much success in the Steelers' defense and why he, at least for me, became a favorite to watch.
Donnie 3:45
Brisker can play a little bit of free safety if he wants to. He can play his traditional strong safety. He can play up in the box. You can do different things with a player like this because that's the name of the game in 2026. It's the norm that guys play safety. They can play strong or free.

What insights does Jaquan Brisker's high school coach provide?

Donnie 4:08
They can play in the slot. It happens pretty often. around the rest of the league and not just here. It's not just, hey, the Steelers are trying to play these guys out of position. That's just happening across the other 32 teams as well. One drive, and he had a huge game against the Rams in the divisional round of the playoffs. I think that's where a lot of people fell in love with this possibility. He was a solid player for the Bears in his four years there. A couple of seasons with 100-plus tackles. He was somebody that could take the ball away. Again, did a lot of different things in that defense. One specific drive against the Rams in that divisional playoff game, a sack, a tackle for loss, and a pass breakup.
Donnie 5:04
That's the type of guy you're getting here. And here's the best part. He's not costing them a lot of money.

How did Jaquan Brisker's high school career shape his NFL potential?

Donnie 5:12
His projections were way out there. And that had me worried that it would be unrealistic after they had made a couple of moves to their secondary. They signed Jamel Dean on the first day of legal tampering on Monday.
