Chapter 1: What are Brian's thoughts on the Pirates' recent signings?
back for the final few minutes here of pomp and joe austin behind the glass and brian batco is our guest here from the pittsburgh post gazette now he said he's going to go to see the pit duke game i'm just curious that you're going in different directions here what did you think about the pirates and these signings uh enough for you or do you want to see more um i mean enough for me on paper in like a logical sensible way but i'd be lying if i didn't say the you know
bleeding heart, you know, sentimental side of me is not a little disappointed that Andrew McCutcheon won't be part of it, most likely. Now, I guess if they find a way to still incorporate him, you know, that would bring up a whole other can of worms of is this ā good use of resources and roster construction and team building.
But, man, if that was the end and we didn't know that was the end and you didn't get really a chance to soak it up, that's kind of unfortunate.
Yeah, I think there's got to be some mending going on here. I'm not sure how that happens or what it looks like. But the fact that he scrubbed all his social media platforms of the Pirates logo or anything to do with the Pirates is pretty telling, which is what people do today. All right, Brian, when you look at ā
Honestly, I want to get your take because we did not get a chance to see Will Howard. So much talk about Will Howard. I was so hopeful last year we got a chance to see him in the preseason, which we did not. When you hear all these words coming out, what have you seen on a daily basis? I mean, there's not much you can do on the field, Kenny.
It's got to be stuff that he's just absorbing from Aaron Rodgers or Mason Rudolph or whatever and carrying into other parts of what they do.

Chapter 2: Why is Will Howard generating so much interest?
Preparation. They all seem very, very interested in how the guy can develop based on his smarts. And that's what my biggest takeaway is. People say the guy's really got it. He knows what he's doing. Obviously, if you're going to win a national championship, you have to do that. You have to be the guy in control.
What have you seen from him overall when you look at him, and why is there so much chatter about a sixth-round draft pick?
Well, I think what I keep coming back to when I think of Will Howard is if you subscribe to the notion that how you do anything is how you do everything, it's really easy to believe in Will Howard because he was ā because of the injury and being relegated to IR ā As far as his role in the organization, he was like the kid in the mailroom for most of the year.
I mean, he was doing every little task that they gave to him, just trying to soak up information. And any crumb of an assignment that he got, he was probably overdoing how much they asked him to do. They were calling him Coach Will. Arthur Smith said he was like another quality control guy for them.
And, you know, it was, he was tasked with doing certain little, you know, Hey, if you can get all the info on this team on third downs or fourth downs or something like that.

Chapter 3: What insights does Brian have about Will Howard's development?
And I remember by the end of the season, I wrote about his kind of his latest mission or objective was get Adam Thielen up to speed. And it wasn't just Will Howard, but you know, he and Mason Rudolph were spending, you know, ample and extra amount of time with Thielen and, to get him integrated into the playbook that late in the game.
So I think it's those intangibles, those qualities that endeared him to the Steelers. I think they've endeared him to the fan base already. And, you know, you need more than that to succeed as an NFL quarterback or an NFL player at any position. But it's not like you're starting from nothing. This was a guy who got enough done for Ohio State to win the national championship.
But it's just difficult to separate, hey, how much of that was the supporting cast around him? Could you have plugged a lot of different quarterbacks into those shoes and had success? Those are the unanswerable questions, but I think that's why Howard is so well-liked and has such a high floor for success in the league, even if it is as a backup for most of his tenure.
So what have you gained by taking a look at this coaching staff? What is your grade, or what do you think of their coaching staff assembled here by Mike McCarthy, knowing that he's going to call the offensive plays, but also the Patrick Grahams, everything he's done on defense? Are you pretty bullish on this group of guys?
Chapter 4: What are the strengths of the new coaching staff?
Yeah, I'd say so. And like you mentioned, Bob, it's all going to revolve around McCarthy. So if you get that right... The rest is window dressing, and if you don't, the rest doesn't matter too much. But I've heard good things about Brian Angelico. I've heard good things about Brian Angelico going back a ways, you know, well before he was in the running to be the Steelers offensive coordinator.
I'm talking seasons ago, maybe when Arthur Smith or Matt Canada was, was calling the shots here, but that that's a name that didn't come out of left field to me. And I think tapping into anybody from that Vikings offensive staff makes sense. I know they weren't good this past year on that side of the ball, but a lot of that was quarterback play.
You saw what they did with Darnold a couple of years ago. So like that, our Patrick Graham on defense, you know, I, Keeping an open mind, I mean, I think it's also tough to assess when the Raiders roster was so barren of talent and experience in a lot of places. Some of the ones that I like, I think the O-line coach pairing is really good with James Campin as the old grizzled veteran of it.
And then you'll have Jari Evans in there to teach the finer points and fundamentals from a recent player point of view and a Hall of Fame caliber player at that.
Chapter 5: How does Brian Angelichio's background influence his role?
And I like Domita Peko on the defensive line. You know, that's going to be a huge ā Huge task for anybody in that role to bring along guys like Derek Harmon and Y.A. Black and even maybe helping Keanu Benton take that next step this year.
Yeah, Angelico, Brian, what have you learned? What have you gathered about what he's going to bring from the Vikings? Obviously not the play caller, but still a philosophy perspective.
And I think even more so than the philosophy perspective, it's going to be having the right ideas for designing the offense to fit the players around it. I mean, when you bounce around to as many teams as he has, although he kind of settled into a nice little foothold with Minnesota and they thought enough of him to give him that nice little elevated bump in title, pass game coordinator.
So I think that tells you that Kevin O'Connell, really appreciated his input. And, you know, it's always a collaborative process for the best coaching staffs, I think. I mean, how much time did we spend and ink did we spend on Sean McVay and Nate Sheilhaus and that relationship and how those guys bounced ideas off of each other? So I think a similar thing was going on there in Minnesota with
KOC and Angelico.

Chapter 6: What impact will James Campen and Jahri Evans have on the offensive line?
He's just not as young of a hotshot name as Nate Schielhaus. So that's what I think is a good thing about that. Mike McCarthy is going to set the agenda. He's going to bring the philosophy. But you'll have Angelico being the guy that that side of the ball kind of answers to under him.
And most of all, I think if you can bring along some of the stuff that worked for you with the Vikings, that can make the Steelers passing offense better as well.
Should be a very interesting offseason. Brian, I look forward to your coverage, and thanks for being here as always. We'll do it again next week, man. Thanks.
And next time you see me, well, I won't be here next week. I'll be on vacation, but I'll see you Sunday night, and the James Harden beard will be gone.
You're going to shave it for the showdown. How about that? Look at that.

Chapter 7: How is Domata Peko expected to contribute to the defensive line?
Yes, I am.
Okay, well, clean shaven, Brian Batko, on this Sunday night, number one Cochran Sports Show. Have a great vacation after that. Anywhere specific, or are you just going to chill out?
Bahamas.
Ooh, I love the Bahamas.
Not Cancun with the rest of the players in the NFL?
No, no, no Cancun. I've never been there either. Bahamas is a great place.
They've got some great stuff down there, and you get a chance. I can give you some when you come in Sunday. I'll give you some of my recommendations that I really like. Good food for sure. Absolutely.

Chapter 8: What are the expectations for the Steelers' passing offense moving forward?
Let's do that.
All right. Ryan Batko, Post Gazette. Thank you very much for joining us here today. Social media's biggest losers brought to you by Awaken 180 Weight Loss. Visit them at awaken180weightloss.com. Do we have anybody who is eligible for that?
I think it's us for not going to the Bahamas with Brian. He's the big winner, and we're the loser for sticking around with the weather. But at least it's 47 degrees today.
Yeah, it'll be a little warmer next week, but it's not going to be what it's like in the Bahamas, that's for sure. And the drinks are better down there, too, at the beach. There's something about the whole atmosphere there. What's Cooking is brought to you by your local GEICO rep, Tim Hester.
Thank you, Mr. Hester.
Very kindly. And our weather is brought to you by Secure Money Advisors, helping you get the retirement on right track. It's partly cloudy today. That high almost at 50 degrees. It's 47. That's my blunt low of 26. Adam Frazier, as we switch that around a little bit.
Remember Adam Frazier, Bob? He had two different stops.
I remember Adam Frazier. He's not here anymore, is he?
Maybe he'll be back for a third.
