Chapter 1: What jewelry options does Joslyn's Jewelry offer?
Second half of the program begins right now with the two-minute drill brought to you by our friends at Joslyn's Jewelry. Gary Joslyn is a great staff. Kansas City's best when it comes to getting you the most beautiful ring, bracelet, necklace, earrings. How about some diamond studs, pearl necklaces? How about engagement rings? They've got almost 1,000 to choose from. Burst stone pieces.
You've got a birthday coming up. They've got hundreds to choose from in each burst stone. Plus Mother's Day is now what? Just a little over three weeks away, I think? So if you haven't been into Joslyn's Jewelry, get over there right now. Southeast corner of 95th and Antioch. You can find them online at joslynsjewelry.com. Go to the number one jewelry store in Kansas City to do business with.
Of course, full-service jewelry, repairs, appraisals. Yep, they do it. It's Joslyn's Jewelry, the gold standard in fine jewelry. Let's get things started here on The Drill. We begin in Houston, Texas. Matt Thomas is with the Sports Talk 790. Matt, how are you, sir? Thank you.
Good. I'm actually calling you, talking to you from Beverly Hills, California. Rockets and Lakers tomorrow night for game one of the playoff series.
Rockets and Lakers, the 4-5 series. But I got to think the Rockets, who are the five, the Lakers are the four, pretty confident with all the Laker injuries, right? It's going to be a disappointment if they don't win the series, isn't it?
That would be an understatement. You know, when you have Luka Doncic, you know, one of the top three scorers in the NBA, Austin Reeves scoring north of 20 points most nights. You're asking LeBron James at 41 years of age to go from the third wheel to the main guy. And while he probably can do that for one or two games, I'd be stunned if he could do it for over a five, six, seven game stretch.
So needless to say, I think the Rockets would like to really take advantage of things early and not even think about Luka and or Austin maybe playing later in the series.
So we've been talking about this team and them coming along here for a couple of years. It's now, you know, they are in a position where they actually become a threat. What would be a successful run in this playoffs? What would everyone go? OK, we took that next step, you know, or am I wrong? Are they thinking championship already?
Well, when you don't have your point guard all year long in Fred VanVleet, that hurt. One of the best offensive rebounders maybe in the history of the sport. Steven Adams has also missed a lot of time, too. He's done for the year. So those two guys are not a part of the package. You know, when you obviously make the Kevin Durant trade, you want to win a championship.

Chapter 2: What is the current status of the Houston Rockets in the playoffs?
And Selfishly, as a voice of the Rockets, I would like for the Rockets to pull off a major upset if they get to that spot, but I don't think anybody in America would really think they'd have much of a chance.
Yeah, I agree. I do like the way they're going, though. I mean, I think they're putting a lot of good pieces together. We'll see how far they can go. We'll see if they get by the Lakers. I'm with you. I like them to beat the Lakers fairly handily.
The Houston Texans have had to ship off some pieces over the last couple of years, but I think it was for this reason, to pay guys like Will Anderson, right? He gets a three-year, $150 million extension. This is according to numerous sources. First of all, do we like the deal? And are we surprised at how big it was?
Not surprised. He is worth every penny of it. And I know he will be the highest paid non-quarterback in the NFL. And that'll last for, what, two weeks? Usually until the next guy gets his big money deal. But he's worth every penny of it. He's been phenomenal. He was a top five pick along with C.J. Stroud.
So the Rockets have got, as you said, the Texans have got some interesting decisions to make about C.J., Today was a no brainer. This was absolutely supposed to be a day that Will Anderson was going to get paid because he's been worth every dime and he's a good guy. And now he's locked up in Houston until at least 2030.
He also, by the way, has a no trade clause in his contract, which is very rare, but that's good for him. And again, a good guy, better football player and money well spent and be curious to see how they're. Texans massage the next big contract, which obviously would be trying to figure out what to do with C.J.

Chapter 3: How are the Lakers impacted by injuries in the playoffs?
Stroud.
And that's supposed to come, if you go by the timeline of quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen, that's supposed to come this year as well.
I don't think it will, though.
And most of them don't happen until right before training camp, maybe even the first couple of days of training camp. You don't think that's going to happen this time?
Honestly, he played so poorly against Pittsburgh and then played worse against New England. It would be... He'd have to do it on a discount, and I don't think with his agent, if you know who David Mulligat is, he's never a discount guy.
So I think he would like to have a better season next year, maybe get the team deeper in the playoffs, at least get them to the championship game for the first time ever in the franchise's history, and then maybe have some leverage.
But right now, I think from a PR standpoint, the Texans have not shown any initial signs to say, let's lock this guy up and put him in that money that would be close to like this. Offensive line, defensive line, not necessarily a position of super need.
They went in for agency and got two or three different linemen that have been not necessarily journeymen, but just guys that have had good careers, but not signing the long-term deals. I'd like to see some stability ultimately with an offensive line for more than one year. It feels like CJ is going through a different set of five in front of them every single year.
You could probably use an extra wide receiver as well. You know, Tank Dell has been a really good positional player as a number two or number three, but he's been hurt for back-to-back seasons, and he's just frail. He's 5'9", 165, and that's going to be tough for him to stay in there.

Chapter 4: What are the expectations for the Rockets in the playoffs?
But right now it's probably a three or four. The reality is this. You let Frambois Valdez walk and he's now on Tiger Lane playing with the Tigers. Emai was a guy that they went to the Far East for the first time in his franchise history. They want to develop a pipeline and bring in players here. He obviously, when he signed, said, I don't want to go play for the Dodgers.
I don't want to go play for the Giants. I want to go somewhere else and make my mark. Well, he made his mark all right. He's miserable and doesn't eat the same time the players do. He's already gone through three interpreters. He's had terrible control issues. He's talked about the hill, the mounds being not like they were in Japan, the baseballs being of a tougher grip.
frankly, right now, too many excuses. So I will give him the benefit of the doubt for probably another month or so, but he's making $20 million. Scott Poros is his client. There's going to be very little wiggle room, I think, the rest of the way for him to feel sorry for him.
He's going to have to step up and help because a lot of money and a three-year commitment is certainly within his realm right now.
We've heard before that the baseballs are different, but I never heard about the mounds. Does he say specifically what's different about the mound?
It's a harder mound, which I, you know, It is what it is. I think a lot of it is if he was 3-0 with an ERA of 2.37, we wouldn't be hearing about this. I think it's just a combination of things. And look, we have to be honest, we've all moved once or twice in our life.
We understand that you have issues with going from one place to the next and certainly from one country to the next would be a huge change. But the reality is also this. Scott Boras is his client. Scott was instructed to go get the biggest money, the best deal possible, and he was able to get it as a major leaguer in the United States. So he had to know this was coming.
So my philosophy has been on my radio show, and again, I want to be empathetic to the spot, but it is also if he doesn't like it here and he doesn't perform well, he's got options the next two years. He needs to take his option out and go back and play in Japan. I don't think that's going to be the case because that would be a terrible precedent for guys to do that.
So hopefully he fixes himself, rest his arm, get back on the mound, because the reality is this, guys, the Astros tonight against St. Louis will start their 10th starting pitcher already, and this is what, game 21 of the season.

Chapter 5: What is the latest on the Houston Texans' contract situation?
for San Diego weather then, and we still had a great time down there, and the downtown was packed. I mean, all the businesses, because we've got funding now from Kansas City, Missouri, and then there's probably going to be funding now from the state of Missouri as well, and the Royals are going to move downtown.
All the businesses down there, still thumbs up, works great, love having the ballpark, or is there anyone who's like, this isn't what we thought we were getting?
You know, it's funny, Seren, because there are certain places like Bub's down by the ballpark. If you're going to Padres game, you're probably going to Bub's. They do so well and they're always packed. But so much turnover continues to happen. And I've lived in San Diego now about a decade. And it's crazy how many different spots have popped up.
So on the outset, it looks like, oh, it'd be great to have a spot right next to Petco Park. You would never run out of business. You'd be fine all the time. But I think owning a business in California is so damn hard and owning a restaurant even harder that it can't be as good as it looks because it feels like there's a new place every other week.
That's interesting. It is California. It is a different breed than it is here. All right. So we do believe that Jose Feliciano and his wife, Kwanzaa Jones, are going to purchase the San Diego Padres. Is that correct? And is the number I'm seeing 3.9 billion reality?
It certainly seems like it. Jared Diamond out of the Wall Street Journal had that report this morning, and it's supposed to become official next week, and then it has to go through all the Major League Baseball owners and get approved. So it feels like it's still a long way home, but it seems like that's what's going to happen.
So in the research we've done leading up to this, because we knew that Jose Feliciano has been in this thing since the beginning, we found out a lot about him. And I'll tell you, Padres fans feel pretty split on this at the moment. Now, there's a big distinction here. here, Soren, because he is part of a group called Clear Lake Capital.
He's actually the leader of that group and the co-founder that owns at least portions of a bunch of different soccer teams, including Chelsea FC. And I think where Padres fans' hesitations come in start with that. They're worried that it's going to be a group of people who are managing this thing from afar.
Now, on the outset, it seems like they're making it very clear that this is Jose Feliciano and his wife, Kwanza Jones, going into business together and This isn't Clear Lake Capital, but I think Padre fans are a little bit nervous considering Peter Seidler was very hands-on as an owner, and he cared a lot about this team.

Chapter 6: How is the Cubs' early season performance shaping up?
Yes. And thankfully, I'm a big NASCAR fan, but I'm going to be honest. I'm not the biggest. I'm not trying to claim I'm the biggest. I'm not. But I really do enjoy NASCAR. And it's really good on the radio. Well, yeah, it is. It's very good on the radio. It's amazing.
Chapter 7: What are the Padres' chances after their recent winning streak?
They're great how they hand off around the track. But Sundays, I'm usually like, that's when my work week begins. My work week ends Friday at 3. We're mailing this part in. I'm not going to lie to you. Friday at 3, we're done. This is fumes. We might not even be here as far as you know. Could be. We might be on tape. We're streaming. We're out. We're out. Oh, we are streaming? We could be out.
We got changed when we started streaming. We could be out enjoying this beautiful sunny day. Yeah, exactly. But I always have, you know, get started on getting the week together on Sunday afternoon, and I always like having the NASCAR on in the background. But I don't like the small tracks.
Hmm.
Which are like the ones that are like, oh, near and dear to the old school NASCAR. Like, you got to go a mile and a half or bigger or the road courses. I cannot handle the brakes, brakes, brakes. We're not in Odessa. Yeah, that's what it's like. It's like, well, those cars don't have the same kind of horsepower. They're like, you know, I do like that they bang around a little bit, but. No.
So we're back. We were in a little one last week. Few sports have gained more. Not the littlest one. And can I just, well, since I pirated the show towards NASCAR, I'm a big NASCAR fan, but stop racing in football stadiums. Oh, yeah. When they go to the Coliseum and whatever that thing is, the Clash or whatever, just don't. Stop it. I'm not watching. I'm just going to tell you.
And I'm a fan, but I'm not watching. A few sports have... Because that's really like... Yeah. You literally barely get to step on the gas. A few sports have gained more... attractiveness to a lot of viewers because of the improvements of broadcast abilities than auto racing. The TVs. The in-car cams are tremendous. Yeah, the in-car cams.
They have everything blanketed and the radio stuff, the way they pitch it from corner to corner and so and so. And here it comes. And so and so, as they go into three. Yeah, pick it up here, so and so. Oh, it's fantastic. You wouldn't think it'd be easy. Great, but the first time I tried it, I was like, all right, let me give it this.
nascar on a racing on radio thing and try i was thoroughly engrossed oh they do a great job they're fantastic at it so i love all the technology stuff that they have in the racing and the different things that they can do so We'll see. And you go back and watch ESPN Classics, the 1987 Daytona 500, and you're like, how did anybody watch this for five hours or however long it is?
The older ones, like two cameras, three cameras, maybe no graphics on the screen. It's like, okay. They've come a long way. They've come a long way. All right, let's take a break. We'll come back. We'll talk a little football, a little baseball next here in the program. Still to come, we'll get you the things you need to know. Kevin Harlan coming up in the 5 o'clock hour.

Chapter 8: What are the implications of the San Diego Padres' potential ownership change?
But I knew Gabe wasn't going to be here. No. Gabe's pissed right now. I'm coming back. He's not listening. I'm trying to go get some promotional stuff. He's not listening.
So it's just us. It's just us.
It's us four.
Danny's still back there.
Oh, Danny is there? Okay. But you don't know which bathroom? Yeah, you can go in the one on the right. He said I didn't walk in. You could. Kind of weird. Just walked in. Hey. Guy standing there at the urinal. Hey. Go in there. Just checking to see how many people. Just the one on the right. And if someone's there, say, I need your name and your rank here in the building.
We're taking a census here today. And just be like, listen, I want to work here one day. I'm doing what I'm told. If they try to refuse. We're on in the bathroom, so they know he's coming. Or they've already left. They could be. They hustled out real quick. Yeah, so we'll find out. See if Thunderdome reports back. Oh, it's going to rain. We're out of here. Boom. Not us. We have to stay.
All right, so Jordan Tyson worked out today, looked explosive, fast, looked at the top of his game. All that stuff. Which is big because it puts him perhaps at the top of the wide receiver board. How much should he be dinged? We bring this up because this was our selection in our mock draft. Now I would question whether or not he'd even be there at 11 now. Yeah, seriously.
Because we fell back from 9 to 11 to take him. We traded with the Dolphins. Got picked 75 out of the deal as well. Did the Dolphins go offense with that pick in their armada? No, the Dolphins went... So it's possible. They go O-tackle. I can't remember. But, I mean, he was still there to get 11. Whoever was 10, that would be Cincinnati. They weren't going to go wide out.
They went defense, I'm sure. I haven't seen anybody, any mock that has Cincinnati.
