Let's get things started with a little bit more from Chiefs OTAs. We'll start with some Eric Biennemi, the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs. The old boss, same as the new boss. Literally. Meet the new boss.

0

124.742 - 141.323 Eric Bieniemy

The enemy said today players can't take anything for granted. There's an imaginary sign outside the door. We're hiring all applicants. But at the end of the day, we want these guys to make sure that they're reapplying every single day. We can't get comfortable being comfortable and not enjoying the fundamentals that we have to work on every single day.

0

141.824 - 160.207 Eric Bieniemy

And I think that's more than anything that we have to do. And so we got to get comfortable being uncomfortable. But on top of that, we got to continue to work. We can't get bored with the little things that's going to help us to grow. And when I say the little things, it's just not necessarily taking place on the football field. It's how we enter the building.

160.267 - 179.23 Eric Bieniemy

It's what we're doing in the weight room. It's what we're doing in the training room. It's what we're doing in our meeting room. So we got to make sure that we're not taking anything for granted because those little things end up adding up for either good reasons or bad reasons. So we just want to make sure that our perception becomes our reality.

180.256 - 194.697 Host (unknown)

Okay. The little things. Attention to details. That's his thing. I like it. They did spend a lot of money on a running back. Of course, Eric Bien-Ami has been a great running back coach, been a very good offensive coordinator. You could say great offensive coordinator as he's stood on the sidelines during a championship.

195.298 - 204.811 Host (unknown)

But he's got a very expensive running back and a guy who was the MVP of the Super Bowl last year. At running back for this year, Bien-Ami was asked what he likes about Walker so far.

205.312 - 221.47 Eric Bieniemy

Very competitive. Very competitive. Very competitive. He's a hard worker. Does not take anything for granted. He's what you want. You love the way, you love his approach in the building. He's very professional in the classroom. And he hates being wrong, you know. So you love all of that about him.

Chapter 3: How does Eric Bieniemy emphasize the importance of fundamentals?

302.102 - 319.859 Host (unknown)

We know what he can do when he has a ball. You've got to be the key to being great in this offense, and a lot of guys haven't been able to do it is what they're doing without the ball. The pass blocking's pretty big, and the route running's pretty big, but the pass blocking can wreck a season if you don't pick that up. That's going to be important. Yeah.

0

319.879 - 334.197 Host (unknown)

And maybe never more important than now because your quarterback doesn't have that last-second escapability he may have had earlier in his career. Yeah. I think it's going to be important to make sure that they're all on the same page. He knows where he's going. I think it's also going to be important.

0

334.217 - 351.947 Host (unknown)

I mean, this isn't the question to Andy Reid, but Andy Reid and Eric Biennium, you've got to figure out what works best for Kenneth Walker as well. Yes. So that's part of the equation. Chiefs have a new wide receiver coach. Chad O'Shea enters the fray. Our first chance to hear from him. Talking about Xavier Worthy. Asked what he likes about Xavier Worthy.

0

352.247 - 368.018 Chad O'Shea

Yeah, I think the first thing is what you don't see, and that's off the field. I mean, he is tremendous in the classroom. His preparation so far has been outstanding. He's very coachable. He's not an air repeater, so we correct mistakes and he moves on very quickly.

0

368.519 - 386.05 Chad O'Shea

So that's something that I don't think you see, you know, when somebody's watching the film or watching from the stands is how good he is in his preparation. That's number one. Number two, I've been very excited or impressed with his ball skills. You know, he catches the ball very well.

386.03 - 404.899 Chad O'Shea

both short at all three levels, short, intermediate, and obviously the deep passes, which you guys saw some of that today, that we were able to connect on some of those. So, I mean, his preparation and who he is and what he brings to the table there is outstanding, like I said, and then probably his ball skills just jump out at me.

405.5 - 409.827 Chad O'Shea

I obviously know about the speed, but I was excited to how well he's caught the football.

410.515 - 425.79 Host (unknown)

Preparation? Did he seem like a guy who would get lost in preparation? Maybe not in the past, but when you've got a guy who comes in as your position coach and he commands the room and you know that, like, hey, the last guy's gone because we didn't get it done.

425.81 - 443.01 Host (unknown)

I mean, I think this is not a new head coach, but I think there's a reason why a lot of first-time head coaches have their best season the first year. Everybody's on their best behavior. Everybody knows, like, listen, they're not firing him now. I might get cut. A couple years down, you're like, dude, it's your ass. You're going to be fired. What am I worried about?

Chapter 4: What are the expectations for Kenneth Walker's performance this season?

784.935 - 800.877 Host (unknown)

Then we got to Woods. I remember, yeah, because he talked about seeing Trent McDuffie and Jalen Watson at somebody's wedding. Yeah, and he said one of the messages he would want to send some of the new guys is, hey, you can do this too. If you play great here, you won't have to necessarily... stay here, you can make money and go somewhere else. And it was questions like that.

0

800.957 - 815.286 Host (unknown)

And then Todd asked that question after that. There was no mention of length. So he volunteered the lengthy guy thing. So he's either heard it or that is his type. I think he's heard it. Because he goes, what is this my type thing? I think it's accurate. I don't think he needs to run from it.

0

815.307 - 834.142 Host (unknown)

I mean, I think we'd all like – if you could be 6'6", 7'6", wingspan, and then do all the other things that's required of a defensive lineman, yeah, I'll start there. Yeah. Seems like a good place to start. Those guys don't usually go in the – they pick 40. I think the Uche thing when it comes to R. Mason Thomas is big.

0

834.242 - 851.665 Host (unknown)

Because if there's a player that they've had on the roster that looks like R. Mason Thomas, that's the guy. And he didn't get him on the field. Now, he didn't get him in training camp either. He got him in the middle of the season. And so would it have been different if they'd had him in the offseason? Figured a way to get him through all the installs and stuff.

0

851.645 - 870.007 Host (unknown)

You know, did they get Uche in there? And it's like, the aptitude's not really there. But, I mean, he's not going to pick this up along the way. Like, we're just spinning our wheels. Let's go another direction. I don't know. I mean, the NASCAR package, that's the 07 Giant. It's been 20 years. Steve Spagnuolo's heard what his type is, I'm sure, a hundred times.

870.127 - 891.203 Host (unknown)

But when you see Charles Amenehu brought in, that looks like his guy. Yep. And at times he looked like you knew why he was his guy. There were some stretches where you're like, wow, I see what he sees in that guy. Yeah, for sure. All right, one more. Joe Cullen, the defensive line coach for the Kansas City Chiefs, asked about having a healthy George Karloftis this year.

891.183 - 916.397 Joe Cullen

well you know one of the things and george doesn't say anything but he broke his hand i mean he had a broken hand and didn't miss a game and he had to have surgery during the bye week and that was his power hand so we so we you know where he likes to use his right hand and power there so um he's just healthy and he's excited and it's going into his fifth year and and uh he knows the defense like the back of his hand he knows spags his defense and our defense well and um

916.9 - 939.077 Joe Cullen

I'm excited for him to have a great year. Did he give any thought to sitting out? No, not at all. I had another guy in my career who had the same injury, Gerald McCoy, and his happened right before the bye, and he came in with a big cast on the first play. Second play that he had, he had a sack with it, and then he just mentally, but no, he was the same way. George was the same way.

939.631 - 959.146 Host (unknown)

I think we knew he had a broken hand last year, but what we didn't know, I don't think until today, was that he had surgery during the bye week, which was week 10. It was after the game that they lost at Buffalo and before the game they played at Denver, and that was the bye week. I had not heard that he had actually had surgery that week. That's of note.

Chapter 5: What impact does Chad O'Shea have on the Chiefs' wide receiver strategy?

1044.558 - 1066.348 Host (unknown)

Can you possibly bring in... A guy who was, you know. Maybe with Chad O'Shea now. There was no way. But talk about having people thinking they have a type now. Yeah. Also, you've got one guy who's missed all these games and did this and that for driving over 100 miles an hour. Are you going to bring in a guy who just did it again? Yeah. And was videotaping it?

0

1066.649 - 1083.83 Host (unknown)

There was initial hope that Micah Parsons would be back early in the season. Apparently, the star edge rusher has come to terms with the fact that that's probably not going to happen. Said today he's just passed the five-month mark from his ACL surgery. His procedure included a meniscus work as well.

0

1084.451 - 1105.102 Host (unknown)

Said he won't be cleared to be back on the football field, even for practice, until the nine-month mark. So that's bad news for the Packers. Not expediting that process right now. Nick Center, Mitchell Robinson is expected to be available for Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Full participant in practice yesterday. I remember he had surgery on a broken pinky finger, I think it was.

0

1105.643 - 1133.832 Host (unknown)

But he's going to be good to go in Game 1. You'll hear Game 1 right here on Sports Radio 810 WHB. Nick's in Spurs. Spurs, 4.5-point favorites, 7.30 on ABC and right here. On Sports Radio 810 WHB, the Royals back at it as well. Royals at Reds. They try to win the series. 6-10 on Royals TV. Kolick versus Burns. Reds minus 158 favorites. We'll see if Stephen Kolick.

0

1133.896 - 1150.577 Host (unknown)

can keep doing what he's been doing. They missed Burns in the opener, but it was an illness, not an injury. So he's feeling better now, and he'll pitch tonight. That's one of the reasons they're in 158. It's not terrible. I've seen worse numbers, but it ain't good. Probably only close because of colic. We'll talk some more NFL football.

1150.617 - 1172.08 Host (unknown)

James Palmer from Bleacher Report joins us next here in the program. A lot of football talk today. OTAs, minicamp going on. Looking forward to getting the season up and rolling. We get through... Chapter 6: How does the Chiefs' defense plan to address Chris Jones' double teams?

1926.194 - 1949.862 James Palmer

That's why they've had some of that connection where those shallow crosses and that stuff over the middle of the field is He has a good feel for space. He has a great feel for throttling through that route and figuring out how he can find his steps and spots. And Patrick feels that as well. I think that part, I don't know, in all honesty, how much is taught or how much is innate within a player.

0

1950.082 - 1970.615 James Palmer

I don't know the percentages. But I do think you're going to have to have a wide receiver coach make sure that they can instill even further, if they can add another element to this, in playing the way your quarterback plays. Because I do think people around the league have said to me, Patrick plays in a very specific way. He is a very feel quarterback. There's a lot of flow to his game.

0

1970.655 - 1990.457 James Palmer

It's not drop, drop, drop, ball out, go. It's a little different. It's outstanding. He's the best at it. but it's a little bit different to play with. I think they know that in terms of the players that they need to draft, but I don't think you really know it until you're seeing them play with Patrick. So I think that part of the offense, to me, is what I have my eye on this offseason for sure.

0

1990.572 - 2009.889 Host (unknown)

We're talking to James Palmer right now, NFL insider from Bleacher Report, as we talk about the Kansas City Chiefs, also co-host of the 89 podcast with Steve Smith Sr. Kenneth Walker was brought in. His best numbers were produced when they lined up under center with the Seattle Seahawks. The Chiefs haven't done that much.

0

2009.969 - 2028.454 Host (unknown)

It's something that a lot of us here in town screamed for last year, that they need to get more power in the game, get away from the RPOs. It's something we've talked about for a lot of years here. And, listen, just because Andy Reid answered a question and said, well, he can run from shotgun, he can run anyway, doesn't mean that they're going to not get under center.

2028.554 - 2042.019 Host (unknown)

But it definitely made a lot of us go, really? Are we just headed to same old, same old? How – you know, Kenneth Walker was not the most prized running back free agent until maybe the – Last four games of the regular season and his postseason and Super Bowl run.

2042.5 - 2050.072 Host (unknown)

Like, how optimistic should Chiefs fans be that Kenneth Walker is, one, going to be all that he can be and that Andy Reid will use him correctly?

2051.034 - 2060.89 James Palmer

Yeah, I mean, that question has been asked of Andy Reid since my dad was covering Andy Reid in Philadelphia.

2061.131 - 2061.231

Yeah.
