What is the pressure to be extraordinary in our 20s?

Unknown 0:00
This is an iHeart Podcast. Guaranteed human. Life is full of hurdles. So how do you keep going? On Hurdle with Emily Abadi, we're talking with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness from professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions about the challenges that shape them and the mindset that keeps them moving forward. At our level, at this scale, being able to fail in front of the entire world, like I can do anything. I can, like, I can do anything. Listen to Hurdle with Emily Abadi on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of iHeart Women's Sports. I'm Michelle McPhee, and I've been unraveling the strangest criminal alliance I've ever reported on.

How does social media influence our perception of success?

Unknown 0:42
A Mormon polygamist and an Armenian businessman. Multi-million dollar house, Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, a billion dollar fraud. But how long can this alliance last? Tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential.

Why can being a gifted child lead to burnout in adulthood?

Unknown 1:16
Either way, the podcast Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Saigon 2:07
This is Saigon, the story of my family and of the country that shaped us.

What is the myth of linear success in our careers?

Unknown 2:12
From iHeart Podcast, Saigon. You don't think I'm serious about a free Vietnam? One city, a divided country, and the war that tore America apart. This is for Vietnam.
Keir Gaines 2:23
They're pouring petrol all over here. Freedom for Vietnam! There's a fire coming to this country and it's going to burn out everything.

Gemma Spake 2:41
Hello everybody, I'm Gemma Spake and welcome back to The Psychology of Your 20s, the podcast where we talk through the biggest changes, moments and transitions of our 20s and what they mean for our psychology. Hello, everybody.

How does learned helplessness affect our motivation?

Gemma Spake 3:00
Welcome back to the show. Welcome back to the podcast. It is so great to have you here back for another episode. Today, we are talking about a very insidious part of our 20s, the pressure to be extraordinary. The pressure to be the best, to be the wunderkind, to be the star. This idea that if we don't make it big now in our 20s, we will never have what it takes. This feeling follows us around everywhere. And I personally think that It destroys a lot of our organic love for so many things and it destroys our ability to be truly curious and truly passionate during a time in our lives when that is like our number one asset. I cannot be the only one who feels this implicit sense that we are all in this race.

What is a healthier definition of being extraordinary?

Gemma Spake 3:59
And we are all losing at the exact same time. We're all in the race. None of us are winning. There are like 10 or 12 people in this world, 10 or 12 amazing 20-somethings who are Olympians, who are business owners, who are authors, who are experts. They're winning, but we are not. And the question always seems to be like, why can't that be me? Why didn't I make it? Why don't I have the motivation to be this extraordinary person? Does that mean that I am less than?

Why are relationships more important than achievements for happiness?

Gemma Spake 4:30
It is so exhausting. And I think we really need to dissect where that comes from, from a psychological standpoint, what it does to our ambition.
