Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

1.33 - 20.127 Ryan Leak

What's going on, my friends? Welcome back to the Ryan League Podcast, where we love to keep things short and sweet for you. Always just want to give you a little nugget that we believe is going to have value to your life, your relationships, your leadership. And we kicked off the year with this idea of a better you. So I'm doing about four or five episodes. I haven't actually decided yet.

20.307 - 46.07 Ryan Leak

Just kind of having some fun. This idea of what a better you and a better me would look like. I've been thinking about what are the words, that can shape our year, can kind of shape our thinking around what we're going to achieve this year and what our life could look like a year from now. How is love just like presenting that thought to people?

What could your life look like a year from now if you did something

Chapter 2: What does it mean to be a better you?

51.415 - 85.574 Ryan Leak

X. And last week we talked about what a better you could look like if you were a focused you. I just find that a lot of people don't achieve their goals because they're not focused. This week, I want to talk to you about a better you that is courageous. Yeah, a courageous you. And it's interesting. Contrary to popular belief, Did you know that you don't actually have to be legit to get started?

0

86.675 - 116.278 Ryan Leak

Isn't that interesting? Like, you don't have to be that legit to get started. You just have to be courageous. You just have to be brave. And somewhere, somehow along the way, we picked up this, what I would call a quiet lie that that says, well, once I'm qualified and once I'm confident or certified or once I get this degree, well, at that point, well, then I'll begin.

0

117.139 - 147.758 Ryan Leak

Once I look the part, once other people have agreed that I'm good at this, then that's when I'll get started. But the thing about courage is it doesn't work like that. Courage doesn't show up after clarity. Courage doesn't show up after you have been certified. No, courage shows up long before you ever had any credibility.

148.379 - 170.674 Ryan Leak

I mean, let's just say, for example, and obviously it's at the beginning of the year, you know, let's just say you want to start working out, okay? You walk into the gym and immediately you feel intimidated. You feel like you don't belong. It feels like everyone looks like they know what they're doing. The trainer is in tip-top shape. The people on the treadmills look focused.

170.774 - 202.474 Ryan Leak

The stair stepper, the rower, like you just look around and you just think everybody here is Looks legit. And I. Don't. But here's. I'm just going to give you the truth. I'm just going to tell you how it actually works. The weights. They don't know if you're a first timer or a pro. Like the treadmill doesn't know who you are. Like the stair stepper has zero opinion about your life.

202.514 - 229.425 Ryan Leak

The elliptical is emotionally unavailable. Like those machines don't require you to know what you're doing. They only respond to usage. I can do the same thing with writing a book or starting a podcast or applying for a role. The same thing with launching any idea that perhaps has been sitting in the notes app on your phone for years.

229.646 - 263.526 Ryan Leak

What I want you to know about all of that is legitimacy is not required. Courage, bravery. Well, yeah, you're going to need that. Because courage is what gets you to press record. Courage is what gets you to hit publish. Courage is what gets you to hit post. Courage is what gets you to submit the application. Courage is what gets you to show up knowing that you might not get picked.

263.726 - 288.309 Ryan Leak

Knowing that you might not get applause. And so there is this thing in you and me that brings us to this legitimacy question, which is the who am I to question. You know what I mean? Who am I to apply for that role? Who am I to be different in a room that rewards sameness?

Chapter 3: Why is courage more important than confidence?

288.35 - 312.424 Ryan Leak

Who am I to speak up when people are smarter than me all around me? Who am I to start over? Who am I to write that book? Who am I to post that? Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? And if we're not careful, this who am I question will keep you exactly in the same place your entire life.

313.703 - 348.823 Ryan Leak

And on this podcast, and in our very short time this week, I just, if you would, allow me to offer you an answer to the question. Who are you? You're someone who's tired of letting fear make decisions for you. Who are you? You're someone who's realizing that comfort has a cost just as much as risk. You're someone who's starting to see that hesitation doesn't protect you. It delays you.

0

350.365 - 360.962 Unknown

Who are you? Well, who are you to do that? You're a courageous you. You're a better you. You're not better than somebody else.

0

360.982 - 400.114 Ryan Leak

You're better than you were yesterday. You see, courage isn't going to guarantee you success. But let me tell you this, hesitation almost guarantees you every single time regret. Most people don't fail because they aren't capable. They fail because they're waiting to feel ready. And courage is rarely loud. Yeah, sometimes courage looks like showing up quietly. Sometimes courage looks awkward.

0

401.095 - 424.031 Ryan Leak

Sometimes courage looks like asking a question you think you should already know the answer to, but you raise your hand anyways. Sometimes courage looks like being the least experienced person in the room and staying anyways. Courage sometimes says, I could be wrong, but I'm going to try anyways. And here's what most people don't understand about courage is that it compounds.

425.273 - 450.96 Ryan Leak

Yes, of course, that first rep is hard and that first episode is uncomfortable and the first draft is always bad and the first conversation is always awkward. But bravery, courage, it builds momentum and momentum builds belief. And belief eventually starts to look a lot like confidence. People don't become confident and then courageous. They become courageous and then confident.

451.721 - 480.114 Ryan Leak

So, my friend, if you are waiting to feel legit, let me save you some time. That day might never come. But the day you choose bravery, that day... Well, it's available to you right now. So today, don't ask yourself, who am I to do this? Ask yourself, who am I becoming if I don't? Because a better you isn't a more polished you. It is not a more impressive you.

480.154 - 506.08 Ryan Leak

It's not a more approved by everyone you. No, no, no, my friend. A better you is a courageous you. And I promise you're going to like that version of you. whole lot more. Thank you so much, my friend, for listening to the Ryan Link Podcast. If today's episode added value to your life in any way, shape, or form, I would ask that you would share it with a friend.

506.1 - 517.472 Ryan Leak
