I told you I would take him out of the lineup, and that's why Marty St. Louis is smarter than me, you, and pretty much everyone else in the city who said, you've got to take this guy out of the lineup. I know it was disappointing when everyone saw the morning skate this morning, and Gallagher and Valeno and Reinbacher and Engstrom were working overtime. You knew that they weren't going to play. Kirby Doc, we've questioned the career that he's had seven years into his National Hockey League career. We've questioned his tenure with the Montreal Canadiens. And I'm not going to tell you that one game will save his career.
But this was probably, if you think about it, the most important game of his NHL career. He had to respond. He was subject to a lot of criticism. Everyone called him out, even though he's not the only one who dropped the ball last game in game two. He was the one who was victim of the final play where he chased the guy for no reason. He lost the puck. He got it back. He iced the puck. He lost this man on the face off. And and J.J. Moser ends up scoring the game winning goal. The coach rewarded Doc today and said, kid, I got confidence in you. Go out and show everyone what you can do. And he did. So we can say whatever we want. No one will ever be able to take away the fact that Kirby Doc in the most important game of his career responded like a champion.
If he could take this. And now the next chapter of his career starts tonight. He could probably end up being that player that a lot of people saw when he was drafted third overall. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but for one night, it must be sweet for him and his family because this is the beauty of sport. Yes, you can go from hero to zero, but you can also go from zero to hero.
