And coming up on the show today, Disney's big, buzzy new show, The Shards, is premiering next week. They had the big red carpet this week, and two of the stars are very well-known, but they share, let's just say that their parents are part of one of Hollywood's most infamous love stories, and they had to answer questions about that on the red carpet. So we're getting into that, a bit of a throwback story. Mm-hmm. Plus, Suri Cruise, daughter of, well, not Suri Cruise anymore, that's the story, daughter of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, has dropped her father's famous last name. We're getting into the backstory of that.
But first, I feel like you have some movie news for us.
Yes, we have a first look at a new Marilyn Monroe film, which is set to star Dakota Johnson and Ellen Burstyn, both playing Marilyn in a new short 17-minute film called Flesh Impact. The project is written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. And, you know, I feel like biopics are starting to feel a little bit overdone. Like every year we have a new biopic come out and like the stars that they're about are still alive, which I always find unusual. But there's a little bit of a twist here because we get a look into what Marilyn's life could have been. So we first got Dakota Johnson, who will be playing Marilyn at the height of her fame. And then we have Ellen Burstyn, who then goes on to play an imagined older version of Marilyn in, you know, the woman we never got to see.
Interesting. Yeah, it's hard because there's been so many different Marilyn Monroe either biopics movies over the years. Michelle Williams famously played her and got an Oscar nomination in My Week with Marilyn. I guess that was different because that was Marilyn through the eyes of a man, so it's not that different. But you kind of got to see her away from the spotlight. And then the last couple of years, there was also that Netflix movie Blonde. That's the last kind of Marilyn story I've seen with Ana de Armas playing her. And Ana was good, but that movie was brutal. It was kind of like every issue that people have had with Marilyn over the years, not with Marilyn the actress, but with like how her name and brand's being treated.
It was this idea of like, look how beautiful she is, but look how much she suffers. And you had to watch her sort of like be treated terribly by all these men. And then there was a terrible like a rape sexual assault scene and and there were all these scenes of her just like in despair. There were even scenes with like an abortion or like a lost baby and then this awful scene with the baby talking to her and like traumatising her and just like really just like almost like trauma porn for people to like watch this everything terrible happen to this like beautiful, iconic woman, which is also hard because we know in real life that she – had like substance abuse issues and people treated her terribly and even now like people still drive by the home where she lived and like where she spent her final days and take photos in front of it like it's a tourist destination so it's it's interesting how her name has sort of been like taken away from her and it's not even her real name her real name was Norma Jean but obviously Marilyn Monroe was her
her Hollywood persona but I feel like Maggie Gyllenhaal is a really interesting filmmaker that she kind of makes films for a female gaze and she like loves to tell women's stories and that's been her whole like ethos and filmmaking because um she made The Bride last this year Well, this year's gone so fast. Did you see that?
