Welcome to the spiritual life. I'm Father Jim Martin. On this podcast we reflect on how people experience God in their prayer. And in their daily lives, and I'm joined by my wonderful, but unfortunately this week not in studio, producer Maggie Van Dorn. Maggie, good to be with you even virtually.
Yeah, it's good to be with you in the virtual, ethereal, spiritual space, Jim.
That's right. This time we are speaking with a really amazing person, Susan Stabile. Can you talk to us a little bit about uh Susan's background?
Yeah, so Susan Stabil is a spiritual director and retreat leader in the Ignatian Jesuit tradition. She was raised Catholic, but actually spent twenty years practicing Buddhism and was even ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist nun before returning to her Catholic faith.
Yeah, and the story of her return is really interesting. Uh Susan now serves as distinguished senior fellow. at the University of St. Thomas, as well as an adjunct instructor in theology at St. Catharines University, where she's also co-director of a contemplative practices initiative. So you can see already why we have her on.
Yeah. Susan offers retreats, spiritual direction, which we have talked about loads on this podcast, and adult faith formation programs nationally. She is the author of Growing in Love and Wisdom: Tibetan Buddhist Sources for Christian Meditation. She also writes and shares reflections through her blog, Creo and Dios. Jim, why did you want to bring Susan's developed on the spiritual life?
Well, a really simple reason, Maggie, and you know, you and I talk about this a lot. Uh one of the topics that comes up frequently, if not in almost every conversation is having a personal relationship with Jesus. And that is something that I think is really mystifying for people. So we wanted to really address it head on. You know, what does it mean to have a personal relationship with Jesus? And what I did was I asked uh several um trusted Jesuit friends, who should we have on? Who is the best person to have on to talk about this? Yeah. And three of them said Susan Stabil. And I said Okay. Highly recommended. Highly recommended. Yes. And she's great. She's so accessible and knowledgeable and you know, she is a real trained
full time you might say spiritual director. So yeah, you as you can see, she really knows her stuff. But we really wanted to address this topic head on.
Yeah. And I mean, what's also very interesting about Susan's perspective, one, she does come from the Ignatian tradition. And so there's a great importance there placed on having a personal relationship with Jesus through Ignatian contemplation and through the spiritual exercises. You know, so she already has that. But then I think what makes her really unique is that she had many years as a practicing Buddhist in which you do not have a personal relationship with God. You don't necessarily even have a a personalized God. And so I think just having that different perspective and and for Susan to recognize the distinctiveness of Ignatian spirituality and having that personal relationship with Jesus and I mean that that's invaluable, right?
Yeah, it's very Christocentric, obviously. And um you're absolutely right. But you know, she has something else that not a lot of spiritual directors have, which is the ability to talk about it.
Yeah.
And to lecture about it and to really communicate it. Because it is an art. Spiritual direction is an art. And I'm just so happy that we, you know, have this uh kind of go to person for this topic, uh which is very mystifying, especially for a lot of Catholics. What does it mean to have this personal relationship with Jesus, which we will unpack?
