What early experiences shaped Tamsen’s career as a news anchor?

Hi there friends, welcome back. I am so glad you're here. So I want to talk about something that actually took me years to admit to myself because I think a lot of you are quietly living inside the exact same feeling right now. For those of you who are new here, I spent 30 years as a news anchor. 30 years. I can't even believe it when I hear myself say it. I worked my way from small markets to bigger ones, and then eventually to my dream job, which was anchoring evening news right here in New York City. If you had asked twenty-two-year-old Tamson what success looked like, that was it. That was it. A desk in New York, a career that I'd built from nothing, a version of my life that I'd been chasing since I was in my twenties.

Like I wrote those goals down every night. I remember it so well. And I have to tell you, the hardest part of it was the guilt I felt when it stopped being enough because it did. I love my TV family. And I know so many of you listening right now were with me on that journey. I was in my dream market, my dream city. I love my coworkers. I had a life from the outside that looked like everything I'd ever worked for. Which is exactly why it was so confusing when something in the back of my head started just nagging at me. A a little voice. And and I'd heard it for a couple of years before I actually left my job. I kept trying to ignore it over and over. Eventually it got louder and louder until it got to a point where I couldn't ignore it anymore.

The more I kept connecting with women across the world about menopause, about perimenopause, women's health, topics that were ignored. I became so passionate about that story. the pull became even stronger. I got to a point where I could not help but finally take the leap. I would be lying to you right now if I said The jump was easy peasy. I had it all figured out. I never looked back. I didn't have it all figured out. I was terrified. I had no idea what was on the other side of quitting my job. There were mornings I'd wake up like in a sweat wondering, oh my gosh, am I throwing everything away that I worked so hard for my whole life to build? Now I have already done an episode about how exactly I set myself up to change my career.

And I'll make sure to leave that link in the show notes for you. You can listen to it right after this one if you want. But today I want to focus on the five signs that let you know it is time because I know a lot of you are talking to me about this. And when I look back over the years, those signs were Glaring. Honestly, some of them I didn't even realize until I was on the other side. So I know quitting your job is not something that everybody can just do. And in most cases, you have got to have a plan coming out of it. And I'm going to go over that as well because it's really important to be honest about that. But today we're going to tackle the five signs that you need to be aware of to know it's time to make that change, no matter what the next step might look like for you.

Before we jump in, one quick favor, please leave a review. It means the world to me and I would so appreciate hearing from you. A sign number one, you've stopped growing and you already know it. I want to start with this one because it is the sign that shows up the earliest and it's also the easiest one to talk yourself out of. And I say that. Because I talk myself out of it year after year. There was a time maybe when your job totally stressed you. It taught you things. It scared you a little bit in a good way. You'd come home from a hard day. And even though you were like so exhausted, there was something underneath you that felt like, I'm so excited to get back there. Like you were building something.

You were becoming someone. When I first started my career, I was so inspired every single day. I actually started out in radio. I was up at two o'clock in the morning. I was at the studio at three o'clock. I was being challenged in ways I had never experienced before. And then when I first came to New York, it was the same thing.
