Look, even before it went so poorly, it didn't make a ton of sense. I think it's really weird to announce for president with the help of someone else. It would be like if I was announcing and you were doing the interview. Like, Chris Silliza with Tony Kornheiser. Like, it's kind of a thing... that you do by yourself, typically. So it was weird to start. I think it's weird to associate yourself with Elon Musk in that you have to kind of own everything he says and does from here on out. But then it went so badly that even the choice of doing it with Elon Musk kind of got overshadowed.
Can you tell us about Ron DeSantis' public speaking skills, the way he presents himself? Because he's elected twice in a very big state. And yet some people say to me he appears very awkward when speaking.
So I think you have to always think of there's a difference between politicians who are good at retail politics and politicians who are good at more sort of bigger state TV ad politics. DeSantis is the latter. So Florida is not a state where you're going to meet most of the voters who are going to vote for you, right? The campaign plays out through TV ads. If you have a good TV ad maker and you're pretty good on TV, that's how voters will get to know you, through ads. Unfortunately for DeSantis, the presidential race is not that. The presidential race is in places like Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina, at least to start. And those are states where voters want to meet you. He has struggled with that, I would say, so far.
He is awkward. I wrote that he's a little bit weird.
