What early experiences shaped Nichole’s lifelong anxiety and faith journey?
What we picture peace to be is like everything is quiet, everything is slow, and you have a perfect environment in order to have peace. That's the control part. Is like I will feel peace once I have this, this, this, this, this in line. Once I get all this done and I feel like I deserve it, then I will sit down. Right. Now I can feel peaceful. Hi
everyone, I'm Annika and this is the Tried and Sweet Podcast. If you're the person in your house, your friend group, or your family who holds everything together, this one is for you. Welcome back to the Tried and True Podcast. Today we're sitting down with Nicole Souvar on what it looks like to finally experience real peace instead. of constantly chasing it. I love a book title whose words alone can just stand alone as something we can hold on to. She is the author of I Don't Have to Hold It All Together. And I know that this conversation is going to give you the same thing it gave me, which is a lot of permission, reminders, and peace. Take a listen. Nicole, thanks so much for joining us on the Tried and Tree podcast.
I could not be more excited to talk about a topic I think we can all relate to. So thanks for being here. Yes, I am looking forward to this conversation, Annika. Okay, you are I'm gonna call you an anxiety expert. Is that fair to
say? Well, I have lived with it my whole life, so I when they say like you have to have what ten thousand hours in order to be an expert at something, so yep, I think so. Do you feel like you put in the you put in
the work? Think so, yes. Well, I I think in a world where I think the the pressures are so high and I feel like we're all spending our lives trying to build I would say a sense of of peace that we think we can control, whether that's through staying busy or staying in charge or trying to hold it all together. We're talking today about what happens when that version of peace that we're chasing doesn't really work, even though maybe on the outside it looks like it's working. So I'd love for you to just share a little bit about what this story looked like for you and then we can just dive into the topic.
Yeah, like you had said that I appeared to be maybe an expert on anxiety. And I say it had to have been at least ten thousand plus hours because my entire life I have had anxiety. For like my earliest memories go back to early elementary where I'm having panic attacks at school. I'm not sleeping at night. I'm anxious about so many things. And back then I didn't have a language for it. I just thought I was, you know, I was just worrying about things. So whenever I would tell a teacher or tell my parents, it was just don't worry about it, just calm down. And That I I tried my hardest to do that. And and I I just never really could get past all of this heavy dread and worry that was with me all the time. And when I became a Christian, um like fourteen years old, I thought maybe some of that would go away.
And it did not. And the the language around it changed though, because instead of people telling me not to worry about it or it's not that big a deal, it was have you prayed about it. Are you reading your Bible enough? It became more of like not so much that I just need to somehow shut it off, which I was still unable to do, but I was also starting to realize in my mind, I bought the lie that I must not be doing this Christian thing well enough because I'm not able to stop worrying. And having the constant language of not it's not that big a deal, don't worry about it. I just stopped sharing and instead I just started shoving it down deeper and it I became a point in my life where all I was doing was trying to manage it on my own because versus like cast your cares on him.
I couldn't. And so me, I felt like I was failing so much of what scripture was telling me to do. And my relationship with Jesus, I just stopped bringing that kind of stuff to him because I felt like that was something I need to get figured out because I just could not get it done. And so much of my life then was trying harder.
