Why is insulin resistance becoming a hidden epidemic in modern health?

David Unwin 0:00
I'm seeing a catastrophe unfold in front of me. When I was a young doctor 40 years ago, I never ever saw anybody under 50 with type 2 diabetes. And now I'm seeing it in every clinic. I'm supposed to wait until you are so sick that no matter how young you are, I am not allowed to give you a continuous glucose monitor. The thing that would teach you. So I'm breaking the rules.
Alberto Zandi 0:25
For the average person at home looking right now at their bellies and thinking, Mm, I do think I have a little bit of a belly, does that mean to an extent that they can be insulin resistant?

painful? Failure. Either in your professional or personal life.

I blame myself for a long time. Things got so bad. So bad. Death would have been A release for me, and I see now, and I often say it. I often say They um When you

doctor Anwin. As a doctor, what is your main area of focus?
David Unwin 1:45
That's a great question. I think It's a b it's like this. Every person like uh has a range of of different futures. And I think as a as a doctor medically I'm trying to get you to Pick the healthiest future. and live the best life you can as a doctor. So this is just um medically. I've become obsessed really with When I look around in the north of England, I Every m so many people look unhealthy. So many people, even young people, look unhealthy. And I think this can't be right. So my focus is what can we do without medication, without drugs, what can we do to improve people's health? So um I think a great example is the States. It's even worse there. In the States, only seven percent of the population are metabolically healthy.
David Unwin 2:57
Only seven percent. So a great majority of people are not really healthy. What do I mean by metabolically healthy? Well, that's to do with obesity, high blood pressure. It's to do with we might cover it fatty liver disease, diabetes, all of these things. And even even here in the UK. People's health span The amount of time they can expect to be healthy is dropping. So health is getting worse. I might illustrate this further but So in in I'm a G P, a family doctor. And I've worked just uh north of Liverpool. I've looked after the same population for nearly forty years. It'll be forty years this September. I've looked after those folks. During that time I've seen a tenfold increase in the number of people with type two diabetes.
David Unwin 3:58
Ten times more. So, this is an epidemic. It's really serious. I'm seeing more and more people with obesity. More and more people with high blood pressure, ten times more people with diabetes. I'm seeing a catastrophe unfold in front of me, in my patients, in my lifetime. А нам ветер. To try and find out why this is. And to improve Their future and their health. But at the same time, I don't think I can just rest with that. Because that leaves all the other people in the UK whose health is deteriorating and round the world. Because I know that the The epidemic I am seeing is not an epidemic, it's actually a pandemic. Because wherever I go in the world. Diabetes Fatty liver, obesity, and cancer are all.
David Unwin 5:02
Rising. Whether it's Malaysia, whether it's New Zealand, anywhere. It's something is happening worldwide. This is it's a pandemic. And we made a lot of fuss, uh perhaps correctly about COVID. But I think this is far more important and it's not talked about enough and I suppose that's why I'm here.
Alberto Zandi 5:25
Thank you. Let's unpack some of those definitions of those problems. Yes. In very simple terms. What is diabetes?
David Unwin 5:33
