It's not safe for men to show emotions in this lifetime. We're working on it but it's still not safe. Safety is necessary for ANYONE at ANYTIME to be vulnerable. I've hosted men's groups and interviewed many men — the theme is always the same — "Quit crying or I'll give you something to cry about, don't be a pussy, man up, toughen up." Male conditioning in our culture is homophobic, dissmissive, and insensitive. In this episode Sam Sarver, drummer, mailman, record-collector enthusiast, and long-time friend since college discuss male emotions and sensitivities and what happens when we don't allow ourselves to feel feelings. In Sam's case, his mental health was suffering and so he chose to quit drinking. He'll tell us his story and motivations for wanting to grow and do better as a husband and father of a daughter, as well as his relationship to drinking and having sex at an early age. We'll hear about his sexual upbringing and how Catholic religion played a role and how he is starting to think about sex education as a father raising a daughter.
