Why is Practical Magic 2 considered a nostalgic sequel and how did it perform?
Nearly 30 years after the original, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are officially back on the big screen in Practical Magic 2. Take a listen to this.
I'm sure you've heard of the Owens family. The ones from Massachusetts. The ones their neighbours whispered. Our witches.
You're the Owen sisters.
Yeah. Everyone we love dies. Oh, right. A really horrible death. But I mean, it's just, it's not great for the Tinder bio.
And also, almost the entire surviving cast of The Family Stone just signed on for a 20-year sequel. Hollywood is obsessed with dragging us back to the movies we loved decades ago, but does waiting 20 or 30 years actually recapture the magic, or are we just paying top dollar for expensive nostalgia? DJ and broadcaster Crossy is here to talk us through the biggest decade-spanning sequels, how much they made, who came back, and whether they were worth the wait. Morning, Crossy.
Good morning. So you've just heard Practical Magic 2.
Yeah. Now, originally, this wasn't much of a hit. It's
a strange one. And when we go down the list, you'll see this has kind of been a thing, you know, that they became cult classics after a while. Practical Magic 1 got panned, but the audiences love it. So the critics were one side, the audience was a second. And this is the same. And I think what's going on here is that some movies need to be watched with silly eyes. because they're silly movies. And I think people went into this expecting, you know, why is that woman walking through that door? Why is this happening? No, it's the 90s. It's graded like the 90s as well. And that's what made Practical Magic so good because it was like a warm hug. This movie has made 700 grand so far in the Irish box office, which is huge.
The Stella Cinema in Dublin is the biggest cinema in the UK and Ireland for people going to see Practical Magic. So the Irish love it.
The Bugs love it.
It's good. I really enjoyed it. But again, you can't go in with critical thinking. This isn't a critical thinking movie. There's going to be tears. You're going to need tissues with you. Some of the cast in this is great. Nicole Kidman came back. Sandra Bullock came back. Stockard Channing and Diana East. My God. Like legends. And it is. It's one of those movies where you're probably going to be watching in years to come. It's the first day of autumn today. What are people going to start doing? Watching this or Hocus Pocus?
Okay, the next one now. Many argued that the sequel was actually better than the original.
The F-18 NATOPS contains everything they want you to know about your aircraft. I'm assuming you know the book inside and out. Damn right. Yeah, you got it. So does your enemy. And we're off. But what the enemy doesn't know is your limits. I intend to find them, test them, push beyond. Today we'll start with what you only think you
know. Tom Cruise in Top Gun Maverick from 2022, 36 years after the original. Oh my goodness.
Did you see the second one? No. Oh my God. Can I just tell you this? It is incredible. And I think people who never got to see the first Top Gun movie the first time around, they're seeing the second one. Tom Cruise is like a young fella.
He's
running around like he's 20 years of age. There's some beautiful scenes in this with Val Kilmore. It's lovely. Kelly McGillis isn't back in it. Meg Ryan is not back in it. But they got brand new people in it and it did so well, right? They're now already looking at Top Gun Maverick 3. That's
how
good it did. They wanted to put it into streaming during COVID and Tom Cruise pushed, like a few more movies they're going to be
talking about,
and says, no, this has to be seen on the big screen. A lot of people panned it. They were going, that's not going to do well. It did more than well. Like it did 1.5 billion worldwide on a budget of 175 million. Oh, that's some return, isn't it? It is huge. So no doubt, as soon as that happened, it was a surprise hit when it came out in 2022 that they said, OK, Tom Cruise, do you want to get on that plane one more time? And he is getting on that plane one more time. And Top Gun Maverick 3 is currently in the works.
