When we came back from that weekend, there was a calmness about him and he was very reasonable, very rational. We talked about what was going to happen. We were looking at ways of being able to repay this money.
Sanjeev Chadha seemed to be coping. In the days after the embezzlement scandal broke, he and Kathleen took the boys camping. Owen and Rory had been so excited about it, it would have been unfair to skip it. Kathleen was very clear, though, Sanjeev needed to get a job. Even if that meant going back to the UK for work.
He asked me what it meant for the two of us as a couple. And I said, I didn't know. I wasn't asking him to leave the house. I wasn't kicking him out. All I wanted was time. We needed to sort this out and then we would see about us and about our relationship. I was supporting him in as much as I could and we were going to tackle this. I thought it was relief that he was relieved that it was all now out in the open and we were just going to deal with it.

Sanjeev seemed to be taking the shame of the embezzlement on the chin. He'd brought his wife coffee in bed on the morning of Sunday, July 28th. That was the height of it. until he put the boys in the family's green Ford Focus later that evening and headed for the Dome Bowling Centre in Carlow.
So I had five weeks off over the summer, and this was about halfway through that. So nobody had to get up the next morning. The most that was going to happen, I suppose, was that Owen was supposed to go to golf camp. So they went off at about six, half six in the evening.
The boys loved being out with their daddy. Not too many 10 or 5-year-olds have heard of or care about community finances. Racking up a strike or two in bowling was much more fun.
It probably got to about nine, half nine. And I had tried phoning him because we'd run out of milk. There was no answer. We're heading for 10 o'clock and I'm like, OK, well, maybe they stopped off to get food. Maybe they went to McDonald's.
She tried again, this time by chance calling from another part of the house.
I could hear his phone ringing upstairs. So went upstairs, found his phone on the bedside cabinet.
No worries there whatsoever. Sanjeev had only recently upgraded his old brick Nokia to one of those new smartphones. The old phone that he used to put in his back pocket was indestructible. The new one wasn't. So he probably left it at home for that reason.
So while I was a little bit sort of odd, it was an easy explanation for it.

And it meant I couldn't get in touch with him. And then I started to get, okay, time was now creeping on. It was after 10, half 10, quarter to 11. And I went to look for the key of our second car. Couldn't find it. So, okay, so now I have no way of contacting him and I have no way of going to find him. So I phoned my brother. He came down to me. This would have been probably about the 11 o'clock mark.
Sanjeev Chadha never intended to go bowling. The Dome Bowl closed at 6pm on the night of Sunday, July 28th.
