Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

2.596 - 25.919 Bec Judd

A listener production. I'm Bec Judd. And I'm Jess Roberts. And we're done with the smoke and mirrors. Fainish shares honest stories about what it takes to look amazing because we did not wake up like this. And you should know the stuff that we chat about on this podcast is based on our personal experiences. We're sharing it for your entertainment. It's definitely not medical advice.

And we'll always be clear with you when something is a paid endorsement. Please always chat with your qualified healthcare team before making any decisions about your health. Hey guys, it's Bec Jard. And Jess Roberts and welcome to Vainish. So last week we had Jacinta Franklin on the show and we kicked it off talking about things that we don't do due to vanity. Yes.

0

62.718 - 83.039 Bec Judd

Yeah, and it was all off the back of that lady who had stopped smiling because she didn't want smile lines. So she just went around with a full resting bitch face so she wouldn't age. And then we chatted about our own and we asked our listeners to send in the things that they've done all in the name of vanity. And we've got some really good ones. So first we have listener Zoe.

83.32 - 112.429 Zoe

Hi, girls. My name is Zoe. And the crazy length I've gone to for anti-aging is I made the decision 15 years ago to completely stay out of the sun. I decided I wanted to have even perfect skin from head to toe, not one tan line. and obviously didn't want sun damage. So all summer long, I'm in linen shirts, long pants. I take umbrellas with me if I'm going to be out or at school pickup.

0

113.19 - 123.306 Zoe

It's hard work, but it does pay off. So I'm now 47, and I do get told I look like I'm in my early 30s. So my advice is definitely avoid the sun.

123.286 - 129.233 Bec Judd

That's so interesting. You know that Brian Johnson that he runs, what's the show he did, Do Not Die?

129.433 - 130.995 Jess Roberts

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

131.015 - 134.78 Bec Judd

Yeah, and he completely avoids the sun. I do.

135.521 - 135.781 Jess Roberts

Do you?

Chapter 2: What are anti-wrinkle injections and how do they work?

1393.409 - 1420.924 Dr. Cara McDonald

And it almost ages you more when you end up with a very smooth, shiny skin. with no movement, no lines, no wrinkles in your sort of 40s and 50s and the rest of the face is giving it away and you get that mismatch. And I think because it's such a mismatch, you start to look older because of it for some reason. I know what you're talking about.

0

1420.944 - 1427.794 Bec Judd

I'm seeing the face now. It's like fully tight but then everything else is kind of hanging off like the jowls and the neck.

0

1428.078 - 1449.535 Dr. Cara McDonald

Yeah. But I think, you know, if you want a guide of where to start, essentially people confuse movement with wrinkles. So just because you can move, it doesn't mean you actually have a wrinkle. So if you don't have a line at rest, you don't have a wrinkle. So I think we need to move away from having no movement and And think about, do I have a wrinkle forming?

0

1449.695 - 1465.442 Dr. Cara McDonald

And it's not too late to start just if you start to see a line at rest. Some people think, oh, that's too late to start. I've got a wrinkle. I'm never going to get rid of it. It's not true. If you've got early lines at rest and you start treating that area with neurotoxin, they will go because you're stopping that muscle folding in the same place over and over again.

0

1465.422 - 1474.125 Dr. Cara McDonald

So if people are wanting a good place to start, generally it's when you start to see some sort of a line still there at rest, not when you're just moving.

1474.145 - 1475.528 Bec Judd

Jess is just looking at herself now.

1475.729 - 1499.703 Dr. Cara McDonald

Any lines at rest? Probably you're never going to have lines at rest if you started at 21. And that's fine. But you need to just be careful that you're not ending up sort of overdoing it. And there is some concern about also a bit like if you don't go to the gym and you don't use that muscle for a long, long time, it atrophies. So it shrinks down and people might think that's great.

1499.863 - 1516.787 Dr. Cara McDonald

And it does mean that you don't get those lines and movement back even when your tox wears off. But what can happen is that the skin starts to get that thin look. Because if you think about your forehead, you've got bone, muscle, skin, and the whole lot is only a few millimeters thick.

1517.187 - 1535.171 Dr. Cara McDonald

And the muscle actually contributes to the thickness of the skin and therefore how the light reflex comes off the skin. And so when you get those people that have had TOCs for many, many years and you see their skin, it looks older. It looks shiny. It looks like a vein. Yeah. I've got that vein. No, no, no, you don't.

Chapter 3: What are the different brands of anti-wrinkle injections available?

1776.979 - 1784.912 Bec Judd

I reckon about 10 years ago that happened to me as well. Yeah. But you can get anti-wrinkle injections in a certain area to drop it. So it wouldn't do that.

0

1784.992 - 1802.76 Dr. Cara McDonald

Yeah. So you can then get a top up to drop it. But you actually, if you've dropped that inner brow, that actually shouldn't drop. And then if you try and drop the outer brow to match it, then you can have heavy brows. Yes. and that can be a problem as well. Oh, gosh.

0

1802.88 - 1814.352 Bec Judd

Yes, it's a fine line. We have a listener question.

0

1814.712 - 1822.821 Jess

Hey, girls, this is Jess. How does this treatment compare with surgical approaches for facial enhancement like brow lifts or jawline surgery?

0

1823.138 - 1838.19 Dr. Cara McDonald

So done well, it absolutely lifts. Done badly, it can drop you. But drop you where? It can drop the brows completely and make you feel heavy. Yeah, right. So it really depends. The brow position is dependent on the forehead muscle, which lifts it.

1838.611 - 1838.751 Unknown

Mm-hmm.

1838.731 - 1856.992 Dr. Cara McDonald

And the depressor muscles, which are partly your frown muscles and partly your crow's feet muscles, so the orbicularis muscle, which is around your eyes, and they all pull the brow down. So to get that brow lift with neurotoxin, you need to very specifically target the muscles that are pulling down without over-treating the muscle that pulls up.

Chapter 4: Can you mix different brands of anti-wrinkle injections?

1857.413 - 1874.738 Dr. Cara McDonald

Okay, because otherwise, yeah, Dr. Spock, yeah. That is the only muscle in your face that lifts your brows is your forehead. Yes, exactly, yeah. And you may not, you've got naturally fairly high brows, but anyone with naturally low brows will tell you they have at some point had toxin done and they feel like they can't lift their eyebrows and can't put their mascara on.

0

1874.758 - 1889.983 Dr. Cara McDonald

Yeah, that's happened to me before. And that is a brow drop, right, rather than brow elevation. It also kind of gets a bit achy and can give you a bit of a headache. Yeah, it's because you're trying, you can't see properly. Yeah. And you're trying to lift them the whole time. Yeah. So you're overworking the muscle. It's like an anti-wrinkle headache, a tox headache. Yeah.

0

1889.963 - 1895.492 Dr. Cara McDonald

But I haven't answered the question, which was how does it compare to surgery? Essentially, it's very, very, very different.

0

1895.613 - 1920.897 Dr. Cara McDonald

I think if you're a surgical indication, meaning that your brows are that heavy or your jaw, you know, you've got severe jawline definition problems with jowls and sagging and loss of the angle of the jaw, you're never going to be able to get the same result with neurotoxin as you can with surgery. But then again, it doesn't come with the same risks. And the price tag. Or price tag.

0

1921.117 - 1939.232 Dr. Cara McDonald

And a lot of people just don't want surgery. They are not prepared to take the risk, take the time, have the money. And so even if you're quite severe, you can often get some improvement there. with neurotoxin in those areas. But again, it's better for a more mild case.

1939.472 - 1952.32 Bec Judd

With the jawline, I remember we had Sarah Davidson come on, seize the yay, spoonful of Sarah. I know Sarah. And she spoke about her experience with anti-wrinkle injections in her masseter muscles.

1952.502 - 1972.07 Dr. Cara McDonald

I have always clenched my jaw really, really intensely, especially when I sleep. And I've tried mouth guards. I even had a splint made, which is like the proper dental device, and I bit through it. Wow, you are clenching. I am so, so bad. You've got a strong jaw. A strong jaw, which I didn't even realise.

1972.11 - 1985.615 Dr. Cara McDonald

But Nick would wake up and my teeth were grinding so loudly that it would wake him up in the middle of the night. And so when I bit through the splint, my dentist was like... That's the last frontier before we go a little bit more intense because they're just so strong.

1985.695 - 2002.875 Dr. Cara McDonald

So he recommended, and this wasn't for cosmetic reasons, but anti-wrinkle injections in the masseter muscles to relax them because that was the only way that I could. They were so hyperactive. Mm. that it also causes tension headaches, migraines. And I didn't know that that was a side effect.
