Hello, SEOs and marketers. My name is Jordan Cooney from Previsible. Joining me today is Jovan Johnson, SEO manager at TMZ. TMZ is a premier media platform company standing out as the most cited entertainment news source in the world. TMZ's rise is based on its consistent ability to break celebrity news. Today, Javon and I are going to discuss his presentation at Brighton SEO Week. Okay, here's my conversation with Javon Johnson, SEO manager at TMZ. Javon, welcome to the Voices of Search Podcast. Hi, Jordan. Thank you for having me. I'm excited to be here. Absolutely. Likewise. So so we've obviously connected a few times in the past. Um, we've we've talked shop in private settings and professional settings.
It's great to have you here on the pod. And I know you're going to be at Brighton SEO, and I don't really think that we need to give people many reasons to come watch your session. I mean, you get to work on some of the funnest, craziest, out-of-this world type conversations. Content, right? I mean, TMZ has access to stuff that most of us in the SEO world never even can fathom getting to witness. But before we get into all that, tell us a little bit about yourself, tell us about your career in SEO, how you got here, and then maybe we can kind of work our way towards some of these other topics related to Brighton's pre your Brighton presentation as well as TMZ.
That that sounds good. So in terms of career, I grew up Jordan wanting to work in professional sports.
Mm.
And I had access. I'm the kind of person I hear something and if it sounds good, I'll I'll take that, right? I wanna take it and run with it. I think about the old BASF commercials. We BS BASF doesn't make the such and such. We make it better, we make it stronger, we make it last longer. So I heard someone talking about being a ball boy. uh on the playground in middle school, took the idea, ended up getting a job with the LA Clippers, uh professional basketball team, worked with them on the court in the locker room for six years, worked with US C football for four years while I went to undergrad at University of Southern California, went to law school to be a sports agent. Right. Uh midway during through law school, I realized I hated the world of professional sports representation.
And despite my access and my experiences and having made lifetime friendships there, right, having gotten scholarships toward school there. felt like I was getting dumber by the day and had to figure it out, had to do something different. So I pivoted to trying to practice law because hey, that's great. Lawyers are respected. I didn't know what lawyers did. I I didn't know what the work really looked like. I didn't know what the stress was. I didn't know what the money was, the hours were, and After I don't know, about seven, eight years there, I was forced to accept that that wasn't the path for me. And thankfully I came to realize I could have a career working in SEO. I knew there were agency jobs before that.
Unfortunately, the agency jobs that I saw available wouldn't support my private school debt that I had to pay back. And so once I learned that I could do this as a career and also following a tiny stint at Google Legal, I was bound. I I was determined to find a role. And I found a job at Shutterfly in two thousand fourteen, last day of two thousand thirteen. And I've been in SEO as a career ever since.
Wow, I I gotta go back to s to some of this because there's there's some really interesting nuggets here.
