Hello SEOs and marketers. My name is Jordan Cooney from Previsible. Joining me today is Noah Lerner, who is the Director of Innovation at Sterling Sky, a digital marketing service that helps businesses increase their online visibility and drive growth through strategic marketing solutions. Today, Noah and I are going to discuss how to build SEO community effectively. Okay, here's my conversation with Noah Lerner, the director of innovation at Sterling Sky. Noah, welcome to the Voice of the Search Podcast.
It's great to be with you today.
I'm super pumped because A, Noah, you do some of the most amazing things for the SEO community that I know of. You've not only been a contributor for many, many years in terms of thought leadership, innovation around how to leverage data, innovation around how to better execute technical and strategic SEO decisions. And I've seen it firsthand at different events, on different shows, podcasts, webinars that you've been a part of. But More importantly, I've also seen it in the SEO community, the Slack community that that you've created and founded. Tell our listeners a little bit about your background, your history, and maybe towards the end of that, can you share why you built the SEO Slack community?
Okay, so I came to SEO after a twenty year career working in bicycle retail.
That's how most of us get in it, right?
Oh totally. Yeah. So I started old. But like I managed a bike shop that grossed about two million dollars a year on Nantucket Island. And Nantucket is an amazing place, super beautiful, huge quantities of bikes, but also bike theft is a huge problem. So my first foray into community building was building a Facebook page on Nantucket Island called Nantucket Stolen Bikes. And I founded this Facebook page in two thousand and nine or ten and it still exists. And there's a thousand members. And anytime someone has a bike stolen, they post in the Facebook community. And then the people in the community like look out around town. And it's not about like, you know, going out and beating up people who steal bikes.
It's just all about recovering the bike. So that's how I got started. And community building for me has always been about trying to gather people who share common interests in order to make the world a smaller place. And that by making the world more connected and smaller, it's almost like you've taken the blinders off. And being able to see the world in its wider context. Which also enables you to envision like Not only am I here in this moment and moving in this particular lane, but there's an infinite number of roads or forks or lanes that are available to me. And I've always felt like Anything that I've got or accomplished was a result of what I was able to learn from other people. due to the relationships that I've built with other folks along the way.
And so I've always tried to like build communities that enable people to try and get that same those same wins, you know, that I was able to kind of win over time.
No doubt. And I mean, it's kind of interesting because, you know, the SEO community in and of itself probably came at a really opportune time, right? I mean, you you started this probably in a moment where people still weren't quite to the same level of back to work or in office that we see today. Conferences in the SEO space were still not quite at their peak like they are. are today. So give us a little bit of context in terms of the rise of the SEO community and why when it really started it was so critical to have that sense of community.
