Hello SEOs, my name is Jordan Cooney from Previsible. And this week we're going to be covering a range of topics, including different approaches to building and managing your SEO teams. Plus, a little real-time SEO in the news and gambling industry. Joining me is Dan Smollin, who is the head of SEO at Bettsburts Media and Technology Group. A company that provides crowdsource sports gambling content, social media advice, and user analytics on a centralized platform so users can make better bets. Yesterday, Dan and I talked about in-house versus agency SEO roles. And today we're going to continue our conversation by discussing remote versus in-house management of SEO teams. Okay, here's my conversation with Dan, the head of SEO at
Bettsperts Media and Technology Group. Dan, welcome back to the Voice to Search Podcast.
Great to be here. Thanks, Sabille.
Yeah, Dan. So yesterday we had a lot of fun talking about the agency and in-house roles, how they're different, the people that you interact with. Ultimately, I think it was super informative in terms of how individuals can grow and develop their skills. And today we're shifting towards this, you know, huge change that's happened in all business, which is in-house versus remote, right? And and how we should be thinking about that as as SEOs and in our careers, what what might uh be considered a a benefit to either being in-house or or remote. So Dan, my first question, and it might be might be a little controversial the way I asked the question, but I I want to really jump into this topic. Is remote the only way to do SEO these days?
Well, post pandemic is probably the only way, but As you know, I I started SEO a while ago and um we're about ten years behind here in in Ireland and the idea of remote work and like that people would actually work uh from their sofa was you know a far-fetched dream but now it's reality. Um I would say though, I would hate to be an SEO starting from scratch and working remote. Like just the the one to one experience you learn from working with people side by side or even just a quick chat, I I don't think Slack does it. And and also uh also trying to know what you should be doing or how long you should be taking tasks or I I think a lot of that's lost and and especially agency side. I mean you can do group hangouts where you can discuss topics and and try and learn different things, but like everyone's if you're remote, everyone's too busy, you know, for that next meeting or to have the banter or have the the crack.
Whereas when everyone's face to face and we have a task of, oh, let's brainstorm, like you actually brainstorm. You get up on that board and you come up with ideas and you have a bit of fun and and maybe even crack open a beer and and have like and cr good creative ideas come out. You know, whereas when you're like when you're online on a jam board trying to fucking be creative, excuse me.
