Why does saying “I’m out of shape” miss the real problem?

Frank S. Ring 0:00
Maybe you know you need to walk more. Maybe you've told yourself I have to get back in shape Maybe you've looked in the mirror, stepped on the scale, felt your energy drop, felt your body stiffen up, or noticed that simple things feel harder than they used to. And maybe the first thought that comes to mind is this. I'm out of shape. But what if that's not really the problem? What if the problem isn't that you're lazy? What if the problem isn't that you're undisciplined? What if the problem isn't that you don't care about your health? What if the real problem is that you've been trying to reset your fitness without a system? In episode 45 of the Walking for Health and Fitness podcast, I'll show you why you're not out of shape in the way you think you are.
Frank S. Ring 0:48
You may be just missing a simple walking system that tells you what to do, when to do it, how to recover, how to build momentum, and how to stay consistent without pressure, guilt, or overdoing it. And by the end of this episode, I'm going to give you a simple first step, the 10 minute recovery walk reset. Because sometimes the answer isn't another hard workout. Sometimes the answer is a better system. Welcome to the Walking for Health and Fitness Podcast. I'm Frank Rang, author, walking coach, and creator of the Walking for Health and Fitness Complete program. And today we're talking about one of the biggest mindset shifts you can make if you want to restart your health, rebuild your body, and finally become consistent with walking.

You're not out of shape. You're just missing a walking system.

Let's walk into it. Walking for Health and Fitness Podcast is about using simple, sustainable movement and mindset to support long-term health, especially when life or health challenges disrupt your routine. This podcast offers practical guidance and real-world perspective with a growing focus on supporting men navigating prostate cancer who are often told to stay active without clear direction. Each episode is here to help you move forward one step at a time. Let's begin.
Frank S. Ring 2:10
Now here is something most people don't realize. When they say I'm out of shape, they're usually diagnosing the symptom, not the cause. Being tired is a symptom. Being stiff is a symptom. Gaining weight is a symptom. Feeling winded going up the stairs is a symptom. Losing motivation is a symptom. Starting and stopping over and over again is a symptom. But the deeper issue is often not your body. It's your system. Or more accurately, the lack of one. Now think about it. Most people try to get back in shape with a burst of emotion. They get frustrated, they get scared, they get inspired, They see a picture of themselves they don't like.

How does relying on motivation instead of a system cause walking failures?

Frank S. Ring 2:52
They have a doctor's appointment. They feel their pants getting tighter. They get tired of feeling tired. And in that moment, they say, That's it. I'm starting Monday. So what do they do? They try to do everything at once. They walk too far, they walk too fast. They start a diet, they try to drink more water. They try to stretch, they try to lift weights, they try to get 10,000 steps. They try to change their whole life in one week, and for a few days it feels exciting. Then life hits, the weather changes, work gets busy, a poor night of sleep happens, the body gets sore, the schedule changes, the emotions drop, and the person says, see, I know I couldn't stick with it. But that's not the truth. The truth is they didn't fail because they were out of shape.
Frank S. Ring 3:40
They failed because emotion started the process. But there was no system to carry it when emotion faded. And emotion always fades. Motivation is great for getting you started, but the system keeps you going. That's the first big shift today. You don't need to shame yourself into walking. You need to systematize yourself into walking. Now let me ask you something. When you go out for a walk, do you know what kind of walk you're doing? Is it a recovery walk? Is it a fitness walk? A stress reduction walk? A breathing walk? A mobility walk? A walk to clear your head? A walk to build stamina. A walk to track progress or a walk to reset after a setback.
