So today on the Wedding Planning Experts, we are going to talk all things floral with somebody that I know very well, my amazing wife, who has been a floral designer for many years.
And I'm excited to talk to you and share some info about floral for all the brides out there.
Yeah, this is going to be a lot of fun. It's different being in the hot seat this time. It's my turn.
All the questions are coming your way. So let's start off talking about your background and kind of how you got started with floral design in weddings.
Yes, I got started in the late 90s. when we would go off and we first started our dj company i would kind of tag along and help with that aspect of the business and we'd go to all these wonderful venues and i'd see all these beautiful decorations everywhere and i'd like you know what i could do that i would have a lot of fun with it and i did i just dove right in and you're talking late 90s lots of white lights and tulle and hurricanes and lots of candles and you know different colored linen squares on tables and so that's how i got started was doing all the faux flowers decorating for reception and then it kind of led into i had some inquiries about hey can you do my bouquets and i was like sure i could do that so that led into learning how to do fresh floral and i'm mostly self-taught
and this is back before you could look up you couldn't go on there was no youtube there was you know no instagram there was you know how do you learn how to do this and if anyone's been in the business as long as i have you started with the old john henry books that had pictures and i just learned to go off the pictures and learn how to make these on my own some trial and error but that's really how i got started
So let's talk about flowers and where they come from. Talk about the ordering process, where you're getting the flowers and what that looks like.
Okay. Well, I do like working with a local company and pretty much all floral shops out there work with this particular company. I have a designated person that I like to work with that I will, once I put an order together, I'll submit. Flowers come, wholesale flowers come from all over the world. Primarily Central America is where a lot of your flowers come from, especially the roses. You can also get flowers, Canada, your Dutch market, those are coming, you know, the Netherlands for your Dutch flowers. Locally, like nationwide, a lot of flowers come from California. Florida, Hawaii, that's primarily where a lot of them are coming from. And it's also going to depend on the time of year. Certain flowers are going to be more available certain times of year from certain regions.
They're coming from a long distance, obviously. So let's talk about cost and why flowers and floral design for weddings is so expensive.
Well, obviously, you have the cost of the flowers. You're going to have some flowers, depending on where they come from, are going to cost more than others. They just are. You also have to keep in mind what it takes to not only get these shipped to us. We have to then, once we receive them, they're boxed. They have to be processed. So they go through a processing. You also have to take into account that we have floral coolers. So we have invested in supplies. So we have the coolers. We have preservatives that we use. And then the stuff for the mechanics are putting flowers together.
