Belgium's still leading 3-1 after 80 minutes. I love chatting to Chris Coles, all things football, and what a time to talk to him after what England did yesterday with that win over Mexico. What's that reaction like back in the UK? We're finding out now with Chris. Welcome to SEN, Chris.
Adam, it's a pleasure. And not too many have got sleep this side of the equator, I can tell you, after the overnight win over Mexico. What's it like in the UK at the moment? England specifically? It's, well, England, yes, England specifically. I suggest that not much has happened in work today because the overnight kickoff, 2am our time, it eventually got going after the hours delay because of storms. And I think everyone is still in that, glorious bubble of satisfaction after what was being described as England's greatest performance since they won the World Cup in 1966. And it's easy to see why, given everything they had to overcome, the altitude, Mexico playing as co-host, they hadn't lost a game, they'd won every game, they hadn't conceded a goal.
It was felt that this was going to be a really, really difficult evening for England. And it was, but all the battles they had to overcome were on the game or in the game itself, the red card for Gerald Kwanzaa, a couple of dubious penalty calls, surviving 25 minutes with 10 men. It has only served to reignite the belief in England that this could be their year. So everyone today is just everywhere you go. This is the beauty of the World Cup. Everywhere you go, every shop you go into, if you're going into a pub, if you're going out with your mates, if you're shopping, you can hear the conversations being had by pretty much everyone.
How did England perform against Mexico in the World Cup?
Did you stay up last night? Did you see the game? What about that Kwanzaa red card? Oh, we've got Norway next, or Haaland. It's just, it's great. When the country's doing well, it feels like everyone is only talking about one thing. So today probably hasn't been very productive in work for most people, but I'm sure they cannot wait now to the quarterfinal against Norway.
Now, Chris, we have been here kind of before. It's been coming home and all sorts of things. Why is this time different?
Well, I mean, Adam, the mistake you've made there is you're applying logic to a situation that is never logical with England fans. Listen, you're absolutely right. It's not come home since 1966. And Things have been a little bit different recently. We know that they've come close. They got to the Euros final in 2020 or 21 when it was delayed for COVID. They got to World Cup quarterfinal in 22. They got to the final again for the Euros in 24. So this team has been slowly building and they have undoubted world superstars in Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane. And they've obviously clearly got incredibly talented players behind that.
What is the reaction in the UK following England's victory?
Declan Rice, Bukeo Saka, Jordan Pickford's an excellent goalkeeper. But this time, with Thomas Tuchel in charge, it does feel a little bit different. They've gone away, the FA, from their safe pair of hands. And Gareth Southgate did an excellent job with England, not just on the pitch, but off the field. He completely changed and revolutionised the culture around England. And now we're beginning to see the fruit of his labour. But Thomas Tuchel was pretty much brought in to win the World Cup. Very good tactical manager, something different, seems to be getting a tune out of these players. So the feeling is that maybe Tuchel is the missing piece in the jigsaw and they can overcome this barrier and win the World Cup.
Listen, they've got big games to come. I mean, Norway have been excellent, Erling Haaland and co. If they win that, it's likely to be Argentina in the semi-final and then probably one of France, Spain in the final.
