this morning? Yeah, I have spoken with Toby and we've been obviously in discussions pretty much on a daily basis as he's gone through his process. And this morning he's decided that he and Georgia are looking to move back to Victoria for family reasons and with the intention of joining Geelong. So that's the decision he's made. And we certainly respect that. He's been a very celebrated figure at our club, very important person. And I know this has been a really tough decision and one he's largely made for family reasons. Was that an emotional phone call between the two of you? Yeah, it was really because, I mean, I love the guy and Georgia as well. And They've got the young family with Isla and they've got further plans there and we've been working together since really the day of the draft in November 2011.
So it's been a long journey and I think we talked about we're really proud of where the club has got to and the regret that he and I have had as we're both leaving the club is that we haven't been able to secure that premiership and Outside of that, I mean, he's been an enormous figure for our club and done everything possible to, you know, not just for the Giants, but for the AFL as well, to grow this club and grow our presence. And, you know, I've got nothing but respect for him and, you know, we'll celebrate him properly. Obviously, you'd love him to be a Wadden Club player and you'd love to see him circumstances that supported that. But, you know, we understand the decision he's made. Were you holding hope
right to the last when you saw his number come up that he might be telling you that he was staying?
Normally when his number comes up, he's after concert tickets or race tips or other things. Look, you never really know what you're going to get when he rings you over the years. But, no, look, I must admit I expected this. I think it probably... Probably the fact the decision dragged out really reflects how torn he's been and how much he feels a part of the Giants. I mean, he'll always be a Giant. He's a legend of the club and I know that I guess it was just a matter of time for him to actually reach that decision. It was just been a really difficult one for him and I think that's probably a good reflection on our club that it's not an easy decision for him and that tells you that the club's in good shape and he
He feels such a strong affection to the playing group and enjoys playing for Adam Kingsley and all the things that go with it. So, look, it's not a major surprise for me today. And I've been just, you know, encouraging him along the way that any information he needed beyond what he already had, you know, we're here to try to help support him think through it. Yeah, he'd love him to have been a one-club player. But at the same time, 15 years of service is really significant.
how much of this is a life decision rather than necessarily a football decision, do you think?
I think it's primarily a family decision and Toby will say that too when he speaks publicly. I mean, he knows that we've got a playing list that can compete and every possibility of getting back up the top next year.
