Here is your morning brief for Thursday, September seventeenth. I'm Luke Vargas for the Wall Street Journal. Global markets are pushing higher today following yesterday's Fed rate hike. Despite slumping following that quarter point raise, stocks are gaining and bond yields around the world are sliding on renewed investor confidence in the Fed being able and ready to tackle higher inflation.

What new legislation targets top importers of Russian oil and gas?

Luke Vargas 0:56
The question now is whether other central banks will be pressured to follow suit, with the Bank of England today expected to hold rates steady, while the Bank of Japan is widely expected to raise rates tomorrow. The House has passed legislation giving President Trump new authority to level tariffs on countries buying Russian energy in order to punish Moscow for the invasion of Ukraine. The bill was approved by the Senate last month and is intended to squeeze the biggest importers of Russian oil and gas. It also extends sanctions on Iran until twenty thirty one. A White House official said that Trump planned to sign the bill. And ExxonMobil is close to signing a preliminary deal with Venezuela's state-run oil company to explore investments in a number of the country's developed and undeveloped fields.

Why is ExxonMobil negotiating a deal with Venezuela’s state oil company now?

Luke Vargas 1:44
It follows similar investment plans by energy rivals Chevron and Continental Resources. The Trump administration has been trying to capitalize on Venezuela's oil reserves, which are said to be around 300 billion barrels of by encouraging American companies to invest there and ship the oil to US refineries. And we've got a lot more coverage of the day's news on the WSJ's What's News podcast. Listen and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.

Think all wealth managers are the same?

How does Fisher Investments differentiate itself from other wealth managers?

ReliaQuest Ad Reader 2:13
Fisher Investments is clearly different. As a fiduciary, Fisher always does what's best for its clients. They don't sell commission-based investment products or make commissions on trades. Their fees are structured so they do better when clients do better. That might be why many of their clients come from other wealth managers. Visit Fisher Investments.com for more.
