1. Joe Biden and Xi Jinping met, probably for the last time as two presidents, at the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation summit in Peru. China’s leader warned of the danger of letting relations with America sour further, a message directed not so much at Mr Biden as the incoming Donald Trump. Mr Trump picked Chris Wright, an oil boss and climate-change sceptic, as prospective energy secretary.
