I didn't know I had coined the phrase, um, but I
coined a phrase called the low power double bind.
And I was playing on the gender double blind, the idea that women need to be a to get ahead in life, but then they get punished for doing so.
And so I said, well the gender double bind is really just a subset of a larger phenomenon, which is the low power double bind.
That when you lack power, you have so much less leeway in how you can influence other people.
And so what I started to become really interested in
is um how what are the best levers you can do with your limited leeway?
How can you present information in a way that's going to allow you to overcome that double bind, that's going to allow you to be able to assert yourself, but without getting that type of pushback.
So that's one thing.
So and then the third book, so Front Info is really about the tension.
Between cooperation and competition, and embedded in that is this idea of power is one of the most important drivers of how that tension gets resolved.
And then I started to become interested in the less powerful.
But along the way, I started thinking about leaders again, and I started realizing something really important, which is that leaders have no choice in whether they impact.
Others.
So I coined a phrase called the leader amplification effect.
And the idea of the leader amplification effect is an offhand compliment by a leader becomes glorious praise, but an offhand insult becomes humiliating criticism.
And so I started realizing that leaders have no choice in whether they impact others, but they have a huge choice in whether the impact is
positive or negative.
And so because we don't have a choice of whether to impact others, we will either inspire or we will infuriate.
And so just like friend and foe, you know, inspire and infuriate, all of us do both of those things.
